Texas becomes a state of the United States
The Texas annexation led to Texas becoming part of the Union. Texas becoming a state created a lot of controversy over slavery in new territories. This was a part of the spark towards the civil war. -
Signing of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo ceded New Mexico and California to the United States. The united states increased in size by 20 percent. This event goes along with the Wilmot Proviso which also led to the beginning of imbalanced powers in representaion. -
Compromise of 1850
After California entering the Union as a free state the controversies grew because of imbalanced represntation. It also brought up the fugitive slave act. The slave states wanted to fight against the free states. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act paased
The Kansas-Nebraska act was considered to be very rare and an abomination in the east because all northern states were supposed to be free stateswere supposed to be slave states. Howover in this event this was not the case, the Kansas-Nebraska act permitted the possibility of slavery in a state above the Mason and Dixon line. -
Bleeding Kansas
Conflict erupted between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups leading to a mini civil war. The free-soil settlement was attacked and John Brown and his followers killed five pro-slavery settlers. -
Dred Scott decision announced
The Dred Scott case was a case between a former slave sueing for his freedom and a his former slave owner. The Dred Scott case made it to the supreme court docket in 1856. The decision stated that the slave had to remain a slave and that congress had no right to prohibit slavery in territories. -
Abraham Lincoln elected president
Abraham becomes president even though he only recieved 40 percent of the popular vote. He ensured that some souhern states would secede. As a Republican he was not intending to distrupt slavery in the south but Southern states thought otherwise. -
South Carolina secedes from the union
South Carolina was the first southern state to seced from the union sparking the civil war. In February of 1861 other states had already seceded as well and createdthe Confederate States of America. -
Civil War
Conflict over issues of how much control the federal government should have over the states, industrialization, trade, and especially slavery had increased tension between Northern and Southern states. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Was introduced by Abraham Lincoln. This document freed all the slaves in the south. It also gave Northerners moral justification to continue in war. -
Crucial Union victory at Gettysburg
The battle of Gettysburg lasted through July 1st to July 3rd in 1863. Lee was defeated by the Union army. It was the bloodiest overall battle in the Civil war. Lee's army was forced to retreat to Virginia and would neverbe able to attack on northern territory. -
End of Civil War
After Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, 11 Southern states seceded from the Union and set up an independent government --- The Confederate States of America. These events led to the outbreak of the Civil War--a brutal, bloody, four-year conflict that left the South defeated. -
Abraham Lincoln is Assassinated
Lincoln was assassinatated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's theatre. Andrew Johnson came into office after this unfortunate event. -
Thirteenth Amendment Ratified
The thirteenth amendment completely abolished slavery everywhere. -
Freedman's Bureau Act approved by congress
A first step to helping the former slaves. I gave the freed slaves land and money. It began to show an improvement in the country as a whole.
