Steve Biko, an anti-apartheid activist, is killed by being beaten by the police. He had major brain damage. He was arrested in August, dying almost a month later. -
President Fredrerik Williem de Klerk
President Fredrerik Williem de Klerk ends the ban on the African National Congress in 1990. In 1993, de Klerk wins the Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela for helping end apartheid. -
