Cook's Landing Site National Historic Reserve

  • Land Spotted

    Nicholas Young, was the first crew member to spot the New Zealand mainland.
  • Landing

    Two boats from the Endeavour were lowered to transport Cook, Banks and others, to the shore.
    Cook and the others land on the eastern bank of the Turanganui River, now the "Cook Landing Site Historic Reserve".
  • Landing Continued

    While Cook and Banks were searching along the western side of the river, for botanical specimens, they heard shots and hurried back to the boats. The boys that were to watch the boats, were fleeing from Maori armed with weapons. In the panic the coxswain fired shots from his musket, killing Te Maro of Nagti Rakai.

    The following day, the longboat, pinnace and yawl were lowered the early morning. It was to carry a large landing party back to the landing site. A group of up to 100 Ngai Tawhiri and Whanau-a-iwi men, gathered on the opposite side of the river to challenge Cook's party with a haka.
    After disscusions with Tupaia, one man swam out to a rock named Te Toka a Taiau where he greeted Cook with a hongi.

    Following the exchange between Cook and Te Toka a Taiau, There was an uneasy meeting between Warriors and Sailors. Which ended in gun shots, 4 Maori casualties.
  • The Three Boys

    Three boys that were 'captured' spent a night on the endeavour, the boys were taken with Cook and others to the eastern bank of the river, where about 100 to 150 armed Maori stood waiting. Finally an old man swam over to Tupaia and presented a green bough as a gesture of peace. Later the boys were released.

    6 am, the Endeavour sailed out of Poverty Bay, so named by Cook as it offered nothing he wanted.
