  • Congress of Berlin

    The territories the Ottoman Empire had lost during the Russo-Turk war were divided among the major powers of Europe, this lead to a rise of tensions in the Balkan region.
  • The Bulgarian Crisis

    Eastern Rumelia joined Bulgaria which was against the congress of Berlin, this greater Bulgaria was supported by Britain as it opposed Russian interest in the area. Russia had to accept defeat on this matter. This almost lead to war in 1886 when the Bulgarian throne was offered to a German, the conflict was prevented by the dual alliance
  • The Armenian Massacre

    The Armenian province had a population of two million Christians which after an attempted revolt were massacred by their Muslim rulers. There were no repercussions for Turky as the great European powers disagreed on the matter.
  • Revolt in Crete

    The Greek inhabitants of Crete revolted against Turkish rule and Greece attacked Crete but was defeated. The European powers intervened and Crete was given self rule until it joined Greece.
  • The young Turks

    A group of young nationalist forced the Sultan to reform Turkey democratically and after an unsuccessful counter coop in 1909 replaced him with his brother. This internal turmoil let Austria-Hungary snatch the rest of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The young Turks reforms ultimately failed and Turkey reverted back to their old ways.
  • First Balkan war

    After further Turkish persecution the Balkan states banded together and drove Turkey out of Europe. The treaty of London was signed to divide the gained territories and Austria added clauses to limit Serbias gains forming the new state of Albania.
  • The second Balkan war

    Bulgaria was unhappy with the treaty of London and attacked Serbia but fearing Bulgarias power Greece and Romania helped Serbia and Bulgaria lost and lost territories. This final event lead to the incredibly high tensions in the Balkans before WW1
