    Nat turner started an uprising of about seventy other armed slaves and killed over 60 white people. After 2 days of horror militia infantry stopped the cause of more damage. Fifty-five slates including Turner were tried and executed for their role.

    This was a a legislation piece written by David Wilmot. The proposal was two years worth of failure. For example, he offered it as a rider on existing bills, introduced on its own, even tried attaching it to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Proviso them prompted the first serious discussion of secession.

    The Compromise of 1850
    The compromise said that California is a free state and did not regulate slavery in the remainder of the Mexican cession all while strengthening the Fugitive Slave Act, a law which compelled Northerners to stop and return escaped slaves to the South.

    Dred Scott was a free slave who was captured and brought south. He took his case to court which made it to the Supreme Court. The courts denied his case because he had no human rights and was fighting for nothing.

    This was a multiple debate in Illinois where they argued on slavery. Even though Douglas won the senate spot Lincoln used this debate to get to the national spotlight and competed to be the US president.

    John Brown was an abolitionist who raided a military base for weapons to hand out to slaves so they could shoot their owners and be free. But the raid failed and he was convicted and executed by hanging.

    Lincoln is a republican which means he is anti-slavery he used to his advantage. It stuck fear into the Southerners. One month after the poll for president South Carolina seceded from the Union then six more states after that in the Spring seceded.
  • The Battle of Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter
    On April 12th, warships turned back the supply convoy to Fort Sumter and opened a 34-hour shelling on the stronghold. The garrison surrendered on April 14.
