The Beginning of Arab-Israeli Conflict
The day after the Israel declared its independence, armies from the Arab countries of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan and Iraq invaded Israel. This launched the first Arab-Israeli war. The war lasted from May to December 1948. -
Suez Crisis
In October 1956 Britain, France and Israel launched a coordinated attack on Egypt . Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsula and British and French troops occupied the Suez Canal Zone. Militarily, they defeated the Egyptian forces. -
Six Day War
In 1967 Egypt demanded that the UN remove its troops from Geza and the Sinai Peninsula. Egyptian troops then moved into the Sinai and Egyptian grounds. They began to close off the Gulf of Aqaba, Israel's route to the Red Sea. Israel took control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strips, West Bank and East Jerusalem. -
Yom Kippur War
Determined to win their territory back Egypt and Syria launched the Yom Kippur War. A suprise attack against Israel in 1973 had been created. The war takes its name from the Jewish holy day when the attack began. -
First Intifada
In 1987 Palestinian resentment of israeli occupation boiled over into a rebellion called the intifada. During the intifada, Palestinian youths battled Israeli troops in widespread street violence. Israel responded with strong military and police resistance, but the fighting continued until the early 1990's.
