Partition of Palestine
The United Nations proposed to partition Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state with Jerusalem under international control. Jewish leaders accepted the proposal, but Arab leaders rejected it. -
First Arab-Israeli War
The day after Israel declared the birth of the democratic state of Israel, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan, and Iraq invaded Israel. In the end, the Arab armies were defeated, cease fire treaties were defined but they were not permanent. Also the Arab state proposed by the UN never came into existence. -
Six- Day War
Egypt demanded that the UN remove its troops from Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula, Egyptian troops then moved into the Sinai and Egypt began to close off the Gulf of Aqaba. Expecting a large scale attack, Israel launched air strikes against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, Israeli ground troops then moved in and rapidly defeated Arab forces. -
Yom Kippur War
Egypt and Syria were determined to get the back the land Israel took, and these two countries launched a surprise attack against Israel. At first, Arab troops made gains in the war, and Israel needed support from the United States. With the support of the United States Israeli forces pushed back the Egyptians and Syrians and both sides agreed to a cease fire. -
Camp David Accords
In the year of 1977, Egyptian president Anwar Sadat declared that he wanted peace for Israel. Then the United States' president Jimmy Carter invited both the president's of both countries to go reconciliate and reach an agreement in the presidential retreat called Camp David. There, the Camp David Accords were made and Egypt recognized Israel and Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to the country of Egypt.
