Six Day War
Israel launched air strikes against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, destroying most of their airplanes on the ground. Israel took control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Israel gained control of land in the West Bank and Gaza with a large Palestinian population. -
Yom Kippur War
Egypt and Syria Wanted to win their territory back, so they launched a surprise attack. With U.S. support, Israeli forces regrouped and pushed back the Egyptian and Syrian armies. After weeks of fighting, both sides agreed to a cease-fire. -
Camp David Accords
Egypt wanted to make peace with Israel, so U.S. President Jimmy Carter invited Egyptian President Anwar el Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to Maryland to do so. It took almost two weeks until both could settle an agreement. The treaty ended 30 years of hostility between Egypt and Israel. -
First Intifada
Palestinian youths battled Israeli troops in widespread street violence. Israel responded with strong military and police resistance, but the fighting continued. -
Second Intifada
Palestinian youths were joined by Palestinian security forces with guns. The Israelis countered by sending troops backed by tanks, fighter jets, and helicopter gunships into cities in the West Bank and Gaza.
