    David Ben-Gurion declared the foundationof of the state Israel. Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan invaded but were beaten back. In 1949, armistice extended the area the United Nations had proposed for the Jews.

    In 1956, Gamal Abdel Nasser came to power in Egypt and integrated the armies of Egypt & Syria and nationalized the European owned Suez Canal. Israel then joined with Britain & France and invaded the Sinai peninsular in Egypt si International pressure forced the Israelis to give up Sinai & the Uk, and for France to remove their troops from the Suez Canal.

    Hostilities between Israel and its neighbours continued to build up both sides' military strength. Israel then launcheda pre-empitive strike against the Arab troopsalong its borders. In the Six-Day War, Israel seized the Sinai from Egypt, the West Bank and the Old City of Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria.
