  • COBOL Invented

    "Common Business Oriented Language", or COBOL, was created. It was designed to be easy to use (almost English-like), especially in the areas of business and finance.   • Atlas Computer

    The Altas Computer was a collaboration between England’s Manchester University, Ferranti Computers, and Plessey. It introduced the idea of virtual memory.

    Ivan Sutherland created one of the first computer drawing programs, which had an huge influence on future drafters, designers, and creatives.
  • Olivetti Programma 101

    This calculator was programmable and could print. Some of them were used by NASA on the Apollo space mission. Invented by the Italian engineer Pier Giorgio Perotto,
  • Tentacle Arm Robot

    The Tentacle Arm Robot was created by Marvin Pinsky. It had 12 joints and could lift the weight of a person (while it was mounted on a wall). Predecessor to current robotics and AI efforts. (Source: Computer History Museum).
