Computer History Timeline

  • Z1 (computer)

    Z1 (computer)
The Z1 was a mechanical computer designed by Konrad Zuse from 1935 to 1936 and built by him from 1936 to 1938. It was a binary electrically driven mechanical calculator with limited programmability, reading instructions from punched tape. I chose this event first because it was the first complex machinism that acts as a computer.
  • The first electric programmable computer

    The first electric programmable computer
The Colossus was the first electric programmable computer and was developed by Tommy Flowers and first demonstrated in December 1943. The Colossus was created to help the British code breakers read encrypted German messages. I chose this one because it was the first electronic computer that became a valuable resource fot military, thats a big jump in tecknology if the military uses it.
  • The first computer company

    The first computer company
The first computer company was the Electronic Controls Company and was founded in 1949 by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, the same individuals who helped create the ENIAC computer. The company was later renamed to EMCC or Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation and released a series of mainframe computers under the UNIVAC name. I think this one should be in the top ten because it was the first computer company ever. This corpiration was the start for all of it.
  • The first computer with RAM

    The first computer with RAM
MIT introduces the Whirlwind machine on March 8, 1955, a revolutionary computer that was the first digital computer with magnetic core RAM and real-time graphics. This particular computer was produced by the smartest people in the United States. RAM is used all the time even now. Thats why I used this one.
  • The first minicomputer

    The first minicomputer
In 1960, Digital Equipment Corporation released its first of many PDP computers the PDP-1. In my oppinion, this sparked the idea to get a computer that was portable. We know these now as Laptops, or Notebooks. I think thats why this would be in the top ten.
  • PDP-8, the first commercially successful minicomputer.

PDP-8, the first commercially successful minicomputer.
Digital Equipment Corp. introduced the PDP-8, the first commercially successful minicomputer. The PDP-8 sold for $18,000, one-fifth the price of a small IBM 360 mainframe. The speed, small size, and reasonable cost enabled the PDP-8 to go into thousands of manufacturing plants, small businesses, and scientific laboratories. This is were computers were starting to be sold on the market, these were some of the first products thats why this is in the top ten.
  • The first workstation

    The first workstation
Although it was never sold, the first workstation is considered to be the Xerox Alto, introduced in 1974. The computer was revolutionary for its time and included a fully functional computer, display, and mouse. The computer operated like many computers today utilizing windows, menus and icons as an interface to its operating system. A large amount of companies and corporations use these now, they basicly contribute to running the country. It should be in top ten because its important.
  • The first laptop or portable computer

The first laptop or portable computer
The IBM 5100 is the first portable computer, which was released on September 1975. The computer weighed 55 pounds and had a five inch CRT display, tape drive, 1.9MHz PALM processor, and 64KB of RAM. In the picture to the right, is an ad of the IBM 5100 taken from a November 1975 issue of Scientific America. This is the first laptop ever, you can take this with you wherever you want to take it. Almost every middle class citezen has one of these thats why it is in the top ten.
  • IBM introduced its PC

    IBM introduced its PC
IBM introduced its PC, igniting a fast growth of the personal computer market. The first PC ran on a 4.77 MHz Intel 8088 microprocessor and used Microsoft´s MS-DOS operating system. This was a large commercaily advertized and sold product, it helped introduce computers. Without the commercials the computer could have died like the type writer. I think thats why its in the top ten
  • Pagemaker for the Macintosh

    Pagemaker for the Macintosh
Paul Brainard introduces Pagemaker for the Macintosh creating the desktop publishing field. This really helped introduce the desktop where all our icons are on the computer, I think that without this computers could have not have worked out.
