Computer History in the 1940's

  • Z3 Konrad Zuse

An early computer that used 2,300 relays, performed floating point binary arithmetic, and had a 22-bit word length. It was used for aerodynamic calculations in world war 2. Destroyed by bomb.
  • Colossus Tommy Flowers

Designed to break the complex Lorenz ciphers during WWII. Was kept secret until the 1970's. May have helped shorten the war by cutting the time to break the messages from weeks to hours.
  • Harvard Mark I Howard Aiken and IBM

    Produced mathematical tables
  • ENIAC Revealed John Mauchly and J. Presper Echert

1,000 times faster than any computer previous. The computer solved more calculations over the many years it was in operation than all of humanity had until that time.
  • First Modem Jack Harrington Air Force Cambridge Research Center

Computers communicate over ordinary voice phone lines through modems. Modulated digital data into sounds, and demodulated received sounds into digital data.
