The Mexican/American War last for 2 years with many people dying. This was caused because of divisions over slavery in territory gain. This would later lead into the Compromise of 1850.

Zackery Taylor died of food poisoning and successor Millard Fillmore was much more interested in the compromise. By September the compromise became law.

California was introduced as the 16th free state. This gave the south no federal restrictions on slavery would be placed on Utah or New Mexico. Taxas lost part of the boundary line from New Mexico, but congress compesated Texas with $10 million. The Fugative Slave Law was passed reqquiring northerners to return runaway slaves to their owners under penalty of law.
