Coming to Ellis Island

  • I was born

    I was born
I was born on my family's farm, which was failing quickly. I remember not eating for days when I was young. What a miserable life. All our hard work meant nothing if the crops failed. We couldn't take it anymore.

Our situation was so bad, that instead of using money to buy next year's crop, we left for America. All of my brothers and sisters, along with my friend's family, came with us.

Life in America - My typical day
Although we were rather poor, my parents made sure we lived in a decent apartment rather than in the slums which we had heard of. Most of my siblings got jobs in sweatshops. However, I was adventurous, and was able to run errands for wealthy families.
  • Civil War

    Civil War

When I first saw how enormous these were, I thought I was dreaming! Even worse, I had to stand on top with no safety equipment! It was dangerous, but it was good - paying.
  • My own steel mill

    My own steel mill
After a long, successful career, I realized that steel was the future of America. Taking all my money, I bought steel and sold it to construction companies. Using that profit, I hired workers to build me a steel mill, from which I could make even more money! America was moving forward, and so was I!
