Roanoke
First English settlement in the new world founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. The first Roanoke colonists didn't survive well due to lack of food and Indian attacks. Salutary Neglect
The policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws. These laws were meant to have America be obedient to England. The Salutary Neglect contributed to the American Revolution because no one followed laws and there was no form of power so the colonists were left to govern themselves.

Jamestown

Great Migration
The movement of roughly 6 million African Americans out of the South. Many blacks headed North in search of better living but they did not have nearly as good of living conditions/equal rights that whites had. Most of the blacks were forced to make their living working with the sharecropping system.

Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact
In 1620 the Mayflower ship was a famous English boat that transported Puritans from Plymouth to the New World. The Mayflower compact was the first governing document of the of the Plymouth colony it was signed on November 11, 1620.

Massachusetts Bay Colony
An English settlement on the east coast of North America around the Massachusetts bay. The Dorchester Company started colonization and was successful with about 20,000 people migrating to England. The economy was very successful too due to trade. -
Connecticut
The Connecticut colony, also known as the River Colony, was founded by Thomas Hooker and other colonists. First settlement of Europeans was in present day Hartford. When Thomas Hooker settled there, he led 100 settlers with 130 heads of cattle to the banks of the Connecticut River. Later he preached sermons there.

Mayland Toleration Act
The Maryland Toleration Act was also known as the Act concerning religion. The law stated that was requiring religious tolerance for Christians. The law was revoked in 1654 by William Claiborne.

Carolina
Eight proprietors founded it. Settlers moved from Virginia along with a group called the Quakers. Lots of African slaves worked.

Bacon's Rebellion
Nathaniel Bacon led the rebellion with 500 followers in Jamestown. Bacon's forces burned the colonial capital to the ground and outnumbered Sir William Berkeley's men and they retreated. Later Berkeley returned home to the burned capital.

Pennsylvania
One of the original 13 colonies founded by William Penn. Known as a "breadbasket" colony because of how much wheat and crops they grew. Produced a lot of food as well and traded it.

New York
New York, originally called New Netherlands, was so named in honor of the Duke of York and Albany, England. The Dutch were the first settlers in this region. In 1683, James II guaranteed New York a representative legislature and personal freedoms through the governor's authority.

Salem Witch Trials
People were falsely accused of being witches. Based off of no evidence and just a guess of what witches were like. People were hanged, slaughtered, pressed and poisoned just because of these accusations.

Great Awakening/Enlightment
The First Great Awakening was protestant religious revival that swept Europe and Britain. It consisted of a religious conversion to the most popular religion. The Second Great Awakening began about 1800 it was an evangicial revival. There was a more positive outlook on the assertion of free will.

Albany Plan
The Albany Plan was a plan to create a unified government for the Thirteen colonies. It took place in Albany, New York in July of 1754 led by George Washington. -
French-Indian War
A 7 year war that was the bloodiest American war in the 18th century. The war was fought between the French and the Native Americans. This war was essentially just fought over land. The French wanted Canada, "Louisiana", and the Great Lakes region. At a peace conference in 1763, the British received Canada from France and Florida from Spain, but permitted France to keep its West Indian sugar islands and gave Louisiana to Spain.

Proclamation of 1763
Issued by King George III that was made after the French and Indian war. It stated that all land to the west of the Appalachian Mountains was off-limits to settlers.

House of Burgesses
Took place in Virginia and it was a representative assembly. Established by George Yeardley, the assembly was one division of the legislature at Jamestown. The Virginia assembly was allowed to elect 2 delegates (burgesses).
