Roanoke
The governor was John White who returned from a trip and found the settlement destroyed. This is North Carolina today. This was the first English Settlement and was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh.

Jamestown
Group of 100 people settled in North America in the James RIver. Jamestown almost came to a close because of death, sickness, and lack of food. Tobacco was a very important crop. Jamestown later expanded.

Mayflower/ Plymouth/ Mayflower Compact
Was signed by 41 colonist. Considered the first written government in United States. Goal was to prevent dissent between Puritans and Pilgrims. First contract was lost. Planned to land in Virginia but landed on Cape Cod.

New York
Dutch settled along the Hudson River. Colonies on New Amsterdam and Manhattan were established. Had important role in the American Revolution.

Great Migration
Puritans migrated to New England. They also migrated to the Chesapeake and West Indies. Had a few hundred pilgrims who went to Plymouth. Traveled on the Mayflower.

Massachusetts Bay Colony
English settlement in North America on the east coast. Group of Puritans from England settled. Received a trading grant from King Charles I. These Puritans were under the rule of John Winthrop and Thomas Dudley.

Carolina
Started out as one. Was founded when King Charles II gave the land to eight noble men. They were known as the Lords Proprietors. They became separate states in 1729. The Spanish and French fought for the land of South Carolina. French was not successful in starting a settlement. The first settlement in South Carolina was made at Albemarle Point in 1670.

Maryland
Colonist settled on St. Clements island on the west coast of Maryland. Got its name by honoring Henrietta Maria, who was the queen. A man named Cecilius wanted Maryland to be a haven for Roman Catholics persecuted in England.

Connecticut
100 people were led to Connecticut by Governor Jay Haynes. One of the original 13 colonies. Founder was Thomas Hooker.

Rhode Island
Smallest of the states. Founded by Roger Williams who had been kicked out of the Massachusetts Colony. Major trade spot. Known as the Ocean State.

Maryland Toleration Act
Named as the beginning of religious freedom. Was designed to protect Trinitarian Christians. People who did not believe this were put to death. Any people of other religions were also put to death.

Pennsylvania
One of the 13 colonies. Founded by William Penn. He wanted it ti be a heaven for his Quakers. Pennsylvania's capital was the place for the first and second Continental Congress. After the war it became the second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

Great Awakening
Protestant religious revival. George Whitefield and John Wesley started it. They went around preaching emotional messages attracting huge crowds. This was fired in New England by Jonathan Edwards.

Albany Plan
Proposed by Benjamin Franklin. He wanted permanent federation of colonies. King George declined this plan, but was named the first attempt colonial cooperation of the American Colonies.

Also known as Seven Years War. Brought much conflict when France expanded. Lasted until 1763. -
Salutary Act
Happened in three time periods. Unofficial British policy that had an impact on Massachusetts. Laws that the British had on America. This changed when the Navigation Act changed. Had law that any goods shipped to America had to be shipped on British ships.

Proclamation of 1763
Britain made a proclamation to conciliate the Indians by checking the settlers on their land. Has become a big cornerstone between Native Americans laws in the US and Canada. Closed the colonial expansion that affects all 13 colonies.
