  • Roanoke

    Roanoke
    A colony that is known as the Lost colony. It had 115 settlers on Roanoke Island which is located off of North Carolina. It was founded by the governor John White. He went back to England and took three years to come back because a war broke out. When he did everyone was gone and the only thing left was the word "Croatoan" on a tree.

    Jamestown was a colony that was located in Virginia. It was founded for a river trade route to the Pacific Ocean. Also it was founded to look for gold and silver. The Virginia Company financed the start of this colony. It had a rough start because it was on a swamp and no farming. The men didn't want to work and the first winter was very harsh.

    It is located in Jamestown, Virginia. The House of Burgesses was led by Governor George Yeardley. It had a elected council which only property owners could vote for the representatives. This council,including Governor George Yeardley, made laws and granted supplies.

  • Great Puritan Migration

    Great Puritan Migration
    A few hundred pilgrims left England on a boat named the Mayflower. They started the Plymouth Colony. It was led by John Winthrop. The pilgrims left for economic reasons and religious freedom. Later on around 1630s, 13,000-21,000 people left for similar reasons and started the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

    The Pilgrims started this colony in Massachusetts in 1620. The colony was started because they wanted to separate from the church. They arrived on a boat named The Mayflower. The Pilgrims then made the Mayflower Compact. This established their foundation of government. When the colony first started out, half of the people died.

    Salutary Neglect
    This was a policy in where the British government said they would make the trade regulations easy going if they stayed loyal to the British. They introduced this because the colonies started making their own government. It went on for a many years without a name. Edmund Burke came up with the name for it. The Salutary Neglect led to other things such as the Navigation Acts.

    A colony founded along the Hudson River by Henry Hudson. At first it was the Dutch's colony. Then the Duke of York took over in 1664. After he took it over, it was used as a military base.

    John Winthrop and Thomas Dudley led 1,000 puritans to start this colony. The colony was located between the Charles and Merrimack Rivers in New England. The main goal of this colony was to set up a society that would let them do what they thought God's wishes would be. It was established in 1630.

    Lord Baltimore founded this colony in a peninsula in the Chesapeake Bay. It was boarded by four rivers. He wanted a haven for Catholics in the new world. By founding this colony, he did just that. Sadly, he died before he could see this one hundred percent done.

    Roger Williams started this colony. It was located with Massachusetts boarding to the north and east. The Atlantic Ocean is to the south and Connecticut is to the west. This colony was founded for religious and political freedom. Roger Williams came from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was banished from for going against the other puritans.

    Maryland Toleration Act
    This was a law that made it a crime to blaspheme God, Holy Trinity, Virgin Mary, early apostles and evangelists. All of this happened in Maryland. It was made to ensure freedom for every Christian settler in Maryland. The act was made up by the Assembly of the Province of Maryland.

  • Carolina

    Carolina
    Carolina was founded by eight supporters of King Charles II. He gave this land to them as a gift for helping keep his throne. It started at the Carolina province. Eventually, the eight supporters decided they did not want it anymore and the throne took it over again. It was used for cash crops to grow and be sold.

    Bacon's rebellion
    A rebellion that happened in Jamestown, Virginia. It was between Nathaniel Bacon and Sir William Berkeley. Berkeley was the governor and Bacon thought Berkeley had favoritism towards the higher class people. He also said it was because Berkeley refused to retaliate against Native Americans.

    Pennsylvania was a royal colony that was founded by William Penn. It was located twelve miles north of Newcastle along the Delaware River. Pennsylvania was made for a place where Quakers could go and be safe. William got this land from the King because he owed money to the Penn family.

    Salem Witch Trials
    The trials happened at the Salem Village in Massachusetts. Two girls named Betty and Abigail were thought to be witched because they were acting insane. The villagers then accused some women of witchcraft. These women were tried and one confessed to being visited by the devil thinking it would help. They were proved gulity and later were killed. This happened to 150 more people.

    Great Awakening
    The Great Awakening happened in all of the colonies. It was an idea in which humans were sinners and God was angry with us. We then needed to ask for forgiveness. This was brought up by Jonathan Edwards and a few others. This happened because religion was becoming more formal and not as personal. Christians were also getting complacent with how they worshiped. People with money and power dominated everything.

    A plan that made the British colonies in North America are under a more centralized government. It was made at the Albany Congress in Albany, New York. This congress is made up of representatives from seven of the colonies.

  • French-Indian War

    French-Indian War
    This was a war between Britain and France that lasted seven years. It was fought in the colonies. The whole war started because of France's expansion on the Ohio River. This expansion led to conflict with the colonies and then Britain attacked. The French held up for awhile with the Indians on their side. William Pitt help turn the war to the British and it ended with the Treaty of Paris and Hubertusburg.

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    This proclamation forbade white settlements on land west of the Appalachian Mountains. King George III made this proclamation. He wanted to avoid all further conflict with Indian tribes. He gave this to all the colonist. This all happened during the French and Indian War.
