Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact
In 1620 the Pilgrims arrived in the new world on a boat called the Mayflower. Shortly after they landed, they named the new area they landed in Plymouth. They then went on to establish to Mayflower compact, which was a set of rules to abide by in the new world.

Great Migration
When the Puritans came to the New World in very large amounts. A large amount of them came to the new world to seek religious freedom and to find treasure.

Massachusetts Bay Colony
In 1630, about 1000 Puritans came to the new world during the great migration and founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This was possible because the King of England approved funding from a joint stock company.

Maryland
Founded in 1632 by Leonard Calvert, for the religious freedom of Roman Catholics. The colony was later used for fisheing and trade in that area.

Connecticut
The English founded a colony in the northwest. They did so to create a trading post closer to the north. They also needed more space to grow tobacco.

Rhode Island
Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636. He was banned from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for not following the laws about religion. He created Rhode Island to give more freedom of religion to those living there.

Maryland Toleration Act
In 1649, this was signed to grant the Catholics in Maryland freedom of religion. It also made the persecution of Catholics ,by Protestants, illegal in Maryland.

Carolina
King Jame II gave eight English aristocrats the land that is the Carolinas today, to start a colony to make a buffer between England and Spain. The colony later split into the two parts it is today.

New York
in 1625 the Dutch founded New York, but originally called in New Amsterdam. In 1664 the English made it a British colony and took if from the Dutch.

Bacon's Rebellion
John Bacon started a revolt against the crown of England and tried to make independent colonies, but It failed. Many of his followers were capture and hanged for treason, and Bacon himself died of dysentery during the revolt.

Pennsylvania
in 1681, King James II gave William Penn the area of Pennsylvania to form a proprietary colony. The colony was a holy experiment for Quakers, who were cast out of regular society for their strange clothes and beliefs.

Salem Witch Trials
In 1692, a wave of hysteria swept across Salem when young girls claimed to be possessed by witches. Trials began against these so called "witches", and 150 people were imprisoned, 7 of which died while in prison. 19 people who were found guilty were hanged, and one man was crushed to death for refusing to testify.

Salutory Neglect
This was when the British Government did not enforce laws on trade in the colonies in purpose for their own financial gain. This took place from 1607 to 1696.

The Great Awakening/Enlightenment
In the 1730's and the 1740's, there was a large growth of Christian beliefs and church goers. The people began to seek Christ very heavily and want a Christian society. There were also missionaries who would travel from town to town preaching Christianity.

French-Indian War
England declared war on France after disputes of who would own the Ohio River Valley, and the French and the Natives joined forces.The English ended up winning and gaining a lot more territory to settle.

Proclamation of 1763
This was signed by the English after the Seven Years War with France. It allows the settlers to settle areas of land west of the Appalachian Mountains. It was signed in the year 1763.
