    Founded in 1585 by Raeleigh. They suffered from food shortages and attacks. John White goes back to England to get more supplies. Comes back 3 years later to find the village deserted. The only clue left for them was the word 'Croatoan' on a tree. Roanoke is now known as the "lost colony". White is never able to go look at Croatoan Island to see if the settlers went there to survive the winter with the Natives. Dangerous seas prevent him from going too far from Roanoke.

    First permanent British settlement. There was a constant search for gold, no food or homes established
    The colony got off to a rough start due to being built on a swamp and arriving right before winter, not giving the colonists enough time to prepare.
    John Smith leads Jamestown persuading people to work and grow crops
    John Rolfe marries Pocahontas as a peace treaty
    John Rolfe and Pocahontas experiment with cash crops and grow tobacco that proves to be a valuable export
  • House of Burgesses

    -the first legislature made up of representitives in North America
    - established at Jamestown
    -only male property owners could vote and had to be 17 or older.

  • Mayflower

    -transported the first English Puritans
    -what we know as 'Pilgrims'
    -Landed at Plymouth
    -Mayflower was a merchant ship whose goods included wine and dry goods, carried an estimated 102 passengers including about 30 crew members
    -The separatists did not want to pledge allegiance to the Church of England and separated themselves from England.

  • Great Migration

    The Great Puritan Migration was a period in the 17th century during which English puritans migrated to New England, the Chesapeake and the West Indies.
    English migration to Massachusetts consisted of a few hundred pilgrims who went to Plymouth Colony in the 1620s and between 13,000 and 21,000 emigrants who went to the Massachusetts Bay Colony between 1630 and 1642.

  • Rhode Island

    -The Dutch establish a trading post on the Connecticut River
    -Thomas Hooker establishes the colony
    -In May, Hooker and his congregation petition to leave the Massachusetts Bay Colony and establish Connecticut

  • Maryland Toleration Act

    -did not bring complete religious freedom
    -provided protection for Catholics
    -This was the second law requiring religious toleration

  • Bacon's rebellion

    • Raised an unauthorized militia of indentured servants and slaves to retaliate against Native Americans -Virginia Governor, William Berkley fights back against Bacon. -Theories include: Bacon having a personal feud with Berkley and Bacon being financed by some colonists who wanted Berkley removed from power

  • Pennslyvania

    -Founded by William Penn
    -Originally a charter colony
    -Haven for Quakers
    -Known as the "Holy Experiment"

  • Salem Witch Trials

    -Wave of hysteria swept over Salem Massachusetts
    -Men and women and accused of practicing witchcraft
    -150 people imprisoned and 19 tried and hanged
    -Eventually the colony admits to the hysteria and compensates families affected by the trials

  • New York

    -Originally called New Netherlands
    -Settled by the Dutch
    -Henry Hudson explores the area in 1611 for the Dutch
    -They were able to keep their land even after the British took control.
    -The Dutch briefly retake control after the naval wars but is quickly given back to the British

    -Began over a specific issue of weather or not the Ohio River Valley belonged to British land or the French.
    -Virginia believed it belonged to the colonies
    -Lasted from 1756 to 1763
    -Sometimes called the Seven Years' War
    -The British repeatedly attack the French Forts
    -Between 1754 and 1755 the French win a string of battles
    -The British win their first battle in Louisbourg in 1758
    -The war ends with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, stating that the British get Canada and Florida.
