First colonists arrive in Virginia
The Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery land in Cape Henry, Virginia. They were immediately attacked by Native Americans. Captain Newport announces the council members elected by the London Company: Edward Maria Wingfield (president), Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, Captain John Ratcliffe, Captain John Martin, Captain George Kendall, and John Smith. -
Jamestown is established
The colony of Jamestown is established. It is named after King James I of England. -
John Ratcliffe elected president.
Edward Maria Wingfield was the president of the council. There were many complaints against him, so he was removed from offlice and John Ratcliffe took his place as president. -
John Smith captured
John Smith was captured by Powhatan tribesmen while he was on an exploring. He was almost killed by Powhatan, but Pocahontas saved him. -
John Smith and Captain Newport return
John Smith went back to Jamestown. Captain Newport also came back with more men & supplies. -
John Smith elected president
John Smith is elected to be the president of the council. -
Sea Venture shipwrecked
Sir Thomas Gates travels to Virginia with 300 settlers (including women and children). They got lost and were shipwrecked in Bermuda. -
John Smith injured; George Percy is interim president
John Smith is was severely injured when gunpowder went off next to him. He returned to England for treatment and George Percy became acting president in his absence. -

Starving Time
During this time, colonists were held captive within Jamestown. Powhatans shot down anyone who escaped and refused to trade with the colonists. After eating all of the food within Jamestown, colonists resorted to eating their pets, horses, and even shoes. The population in Virginia went from 300 people to less than 60 people. -
Pilgrims arrive in Plymouth, Massachusetts
Pilgrims travel on the Mayflower to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
