Freedman's Bureau Established
This was a group that asssisted and fought for the Freedmen or the free slaves after the Civil War. -
Recontruction Begins
A reconstruction of the South began after the war now that we are one nation once again. There was many contreversies sourrounding the funding and how they are gonna do it. -
14th Ammendment
"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." -
Alaska was Bought
Alaska was bought from Russia because Russia was unaware of the riches that were in Alaska. -
Grant was President
Grant became President after Andrew Johnson. -
Transcontinetal Railroad Complete
The railroad that changed the country was completed. This railroad linkwed the country together as one. -
Fisk and Gould Scandal
This was a scandal that was involved with the federal government. This was a big thing because it caused alot of harm to the governments funding,. Grant's presidency was fogged by this even though he wasnt involved in it. -
15th Ammendment
This gave freed African Americans that were citizens of the U.S. the right to vote. -
Tweed Scandal
Tweed was a New York Senate, he was acused and found guilty of stealing around $30 million of taxpayer moneys. -
Grant becomes President
Grant became president once again even after a lot of controversies with corruption of his cabinet and many men inside the government. -
Credit Mobilier Scandal
Basically there was a lot of stocks and bonds sold and bought to build the Union Pacific railway. The government funded this company with $72 million even though the entire thing would of only costed $53 million. -
Panic of 1873
This another panic in 1873 when the economy suddenly crashed and caused a huge panic in the stock market to make a even larger crash. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875
This act guarenteed the African Americans equal treatment in public areas instead of complete segregation. Sadly this act was rarely enforced and years later after this failed attempted the Supreme Court overturned this act. -
Resumption Acts Passed
This act lowered the production of paper money and attempted to change the paper currency back to a silver coin. -
Whiskey Ring Scandal
This was a scandal about peole not paying taxes on the production of alcohol by having corruption in the government. This allowed them to be able to slip by without paying ,but once they got caught $3 million was recieved by the government. -
Railroad Strike that Paralyzes the Nation
A strike against the railroad stopped the ability to use the railroads or do anything with them and making money from it stopped completely and paralyzed the trading nationally. -
Reconstruction Ends
The reconstruction of the South was stopped because of funding and there was better thins to do then rebuild at the time so the South was left on there own to bringing it back up. -
Compromise of 1877
This stopped the reconstrution era and it took the troops out of the South. -
Thomas Edison Invented the lightbulb
This was a huge staple in history because it made house holds less dependant on candles and now electricity could come into play into every house hold in America. -
Garfield Becomes President
Garfield became president after Grant stepped down, This was a huge success because he was accused of being in a scandal and still won the election.
