  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    The "Big Three" FDR (US), Churchill (UK), and Stalin (USSR) all agree to govern Germany jointly. They do this by splitting it into 4 sections. The US, USSR, UK, and France would each govern one section. However, the capital (located in the USSR's section) was also spit. Since the USSR was communist and the others were democratic, this created a huge issue. This relates to geographic because the Big Three had to split land.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    The United States President at the time, Truman, collects $400 million to aid Greece and Turkey against communism. This relates to economic because it moves money out into the world and into society.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    This plan was created by the United States Secretary of State George Marshall. It's idea was to rebuild Europe from the destruction of WWII. This angered the Soviets and later led to Comecon. This plan relates to social because it improves the US relationship with many countries in Europe.
  • Comecon

    Comecon
    This was the Soviet's response to the Marshall Plan created by the US. It provided member nations with aid so that they would not take money from the US. This relates to economical because the Soviets were providing aid to other countries' economies so that they wouldn't let the US do the same thing.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    This war began when the UN forces (mainly led by the US) aided South Korea, and the USSR began to aid North Korea. War occurred back and forth over the 38th parallel (the border between North and South Korea). In 1953, the 38th parallel was re-established and communism was not spread. This relates to geographic because the border between lands was constantly pushed back and forth.
  • First man in space

    First man in space
    The USSR and the US were competing in what was known as the "Space Race". The goal of this was to prove who was the most technologically advanced. On this day, the USSR sent Yuri Gagarin into space to become the first man in space. This relates to intellectual because two countries were competing to see who could become the most innovative.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    This crisis began when the Soviet Union sent nuclear missiles into Cuba. The US was not very happy about this because Cuba is very close to them. The United States' response was blockading Cuba. This relates to cultural because it effects the Cuban's lives and culture. Up until recently, people were not able to get an airline to Cuba.
  • USSR removes missles from Cuba

    USSR removes missles from Cuba
    On this day, the US and the USSR came to an agreement, and Kruschev (the Soviet leader) removed the missiles from Cuba. This relates to political because two completely different governments had to discuss and decide an agreement.
  • CIA Propaganda?

    CIA Propaganda?
    New York Times revealed that the liberal anti-communist magazine "Encounter" was indirectly funded by the CIA. This led to many questions on how much the CIA had an impact on what went in the magazine. This relates to artistic because there were very often pictures in the magazine, that easily could have been propaganda against communism.
  • First man on the moon

    First man on the moon
    The US sent three men into outer space to accomplish something much greater than what the Soviets achieved; they were going to land on the moon. Neil Armstrong became the first man to step foot on the moon. This once again relates to intellectual because the US was trying to intellectually best the USSR.
  • Anti-religious indoctrination of school children

    Anti-religious indoctrination of school children
    Communists, being atheists, often sought out to press anti-religious indoctrination to school children. This was very present starting in 1970. This relates to religious because it pressed certain beliefs to younger children
  • SALT

    SALT
    Détente begins to occur at this time (easing of political tensions). Nixon (US President) and Brezhnev (Soviet leader) meet and agree to SALT, which stands for Strategic Arms Limitations Talks. What this treaty did was stop or slow down the manufacture of strategic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons. So it attempted to stop the arms race between the two countries. This was political because two governments had to come to a political agreement.
  • USSR beats the US in basketball

    USSR beats the US in basketball
    For the first time for US basketball, they were beat 51-50 by the Soviet Union. This sparked lots of hate and protests between the two countries. This relates to social because the arguments were between the people, not the governments.
  • "Miracle on Ice"

    "Miracle on Ice"
    This was the name for the 1980 hockey match between the US and Soviet Union. The US ended up with a 4-3 win. This, just like the basketball match, sparked many hate and arguments, relating it to social since it was between people and not governments.
  • End of the Berlin Wall

    End of the Berlin Wall
    The Berlin wall separating West and East Berlin got torn down after people from communist East Berlin were finally allowed to leave and then enter West Berlin. This event signified the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. This effected the culture of East Europe because it would go on to completely change the way of life that they were used to.
  • Putin wins again

    Putin wins again
    Putin wins his third election as the president of Russia. Many people began to think that he did not earn over 60% of the vote and that the elections were rigged. This relates to psychological because it would effect people's thoughts on their country, and the may lose faith in their country.
