Yalta Confrenece (Cold War Begins)
The Yalta conference is where the main allied leaders Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill agreed on what would happen to Berlin and how it would be shared between the countries. They decided to split Germany into four occupied zones. -
Churchhill's "Iron Curtain" speech
The speech soon became known for being the begining of the Cold War. Winston Churchill was stating that the Russians have cut off Eastern-Europe from the Western-World and imposed communism on them. -
The Marshall Plan
The Parshall Plan was an American program that helped aid Europe. The United States gave the support to Europe to help them rebuild the economies after the end of World War 2 in order to help prevent the spread of Soviet Communism. -
Berlin Blockade and Airlift
The Berlin Blockade was an attempt to keep France, Great Britian and the Unitd States from traveling to their sectors of Belrin. Eventually, the western powers created an airlift that lasted nearly a year delivery much needed supplies to West Berlin. -
Korean War
It started as a war between North and South Korea but then soon turned international. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. American officials believed it was a war against the forces of international communism. -
The Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a political and miltary alliance estbalished between the Soviet Union and some European countries. This was led by the USSR. The Soviet Union formed this alliance as a counterbalance to NATO. -
Vietnam War
The war began after the rise to power of Ho Chi Minh and his communist Viet Minh party in North Vietnam, and continued through the intense Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. More than 3 million people were killed in the Vietnam War and more than half were Vietnamese civilians. -
Bay of the Pigs
Cuban nationalist Fidel Castro brought his army into Havana and overthrew General Fulgencio Batista, the nations Maericna-backed president. Officials at the U.S. State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency attempted to push Castro from power. The CIA launced a full scale invasion of Cuba but were out numbered by Castro's troops. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
During the Cuban Missile Crisis, leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union had a tense political and military standoff over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba. The U.S. agreed to the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s offer to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba. -
Berlin Wall taken down
The wall kept the German Democratic Republic from crossing the border into the other parts of Germany.The wall was taken down when the head of the East German Communist Party annuced that citizens of he German Democrtic Republic could travel across the border whenever they wanted.
