  • Yalta Conference

    When the Cold War came to be, Roosevelt was accused of being a sellout. Stalin got his way. Two months after the conference Roosevelt had a stroke.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Roosevelt had been president sice 1933. When he died the Truman Doctrine began. It was the US' first definitive Cold War Policy.
  • Marshall Plan

    On June 5, 1947 George C. Marshall called for American assistance on rebuilding Europe. By 1948 European agriculture and industrial were restored. George later won a nobel prize.
  • Berlin Aircraft

    After World War 2 Germany was split into four zones. The west created a seperate government. The soviets didn't like this so they made a blockade. To counter western powers created an airlift for 2,326,406 of food and supplies.
  • USSR Atomic Bomb

    After much time building in secrecy, the soviets tested the first atomic bomb. The world was shocked. The president was slow to believe this.
  • NATO

    Nato's main purpose was to prevent the Soviet Union from taking over countries. Nato is a deal between Europe and North America. Since its start many countries have joined NATO.
  • Korean War Begins

    North Korea attacked South Korea on June 25 1950. America would then help South Korea fight. The war lasted 3 years.
  • East Germany Uprising

    It began with a strike by East Berlin constructio workers. The next day it turned into a wide spread uprising. The next day it turned into a wide spread uprising. The soviet Union used heavy tanks to supress the uprising.
  • Rosenberg Spy Case

    The Roesenbergs were caught giving American atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. The outcome was their exicution. There have been many debates on whether the convictio was true and fair.
  • Korean war end

    On July 27, 1952 a cease fire stopped the war but not the split. North Korea, China and the United Nations signed an armistice. South Korea did not sign it. They are both still split up today.
  • Nakita Khruschev comes to power

    when Joseph Stalin died in 1953, the Soviet Union began to struggle. In 1953 Nakita Khruschev gave a speech denouncing Stalin. This would lead to his power until 1964.
  • Warsaw Pact

    The warsaw pact is short for "treaty of mutal friendship, co-operation, and mutal assistance". It was signed in May of 1955. It was the communist counteraction to NATO.
  • Hungarian Uprising

    Students gathered and protested forward democratic elections. Aswell as moving the government away from Stalinism. 2 days later leaders gave into the protesters.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik was the world's first satellite. It was the size of a basketball and weighed 183 lbs. It took 93 sec. to orbit Earth.
  • U2 Incident

    Francis Gary Powers was a spy on a mission. He was taking top secret pictures of denied Russian territory when he died. He was shot down by Soviet Surface to Air missles.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    America tried invading Cuba. They landed at Bahie de Cochinos ( Bay of Pigs). They were quickly defeated by Cuba.
  • Berlin Wall Building

    The communist government of East Germany built a wall made of concrete and barbed wire. This was to close the borders of west and east Berlin. Nobody from East Berlin was allowed into West Berlin.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    In May 1962, Nikita Khruschev found data of placing nuclear missles in Cub. This was to be used against the US. Especially during the Bay of Pigs.
  • Prague Spring

    Prague Spring was the movement to reform Czechoslavakia in 1968. It began Alexander Dubeek's appointment as First Secretary. It ended with the warsaw pact.
  • Soviet Union invades Afghanistan

    In Christmas 1979, Russian paratroopers landed in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The country was already in the midst of a civil war. The prime minister, Hazifullah Amin, tried to slip aside Muslim tradition within the nation and he wanted a more western slant to Afghanistan.
  • Lech Walesa organizes trade union Soldarity

    In early August 1980, workers across Poland went on strike to protest rising food prices. In Gdansk, 17,000 workers at the Lenin Shipyards put up a strike and barricaded themselves into the plant.
  • Mikhail Gorbechev comes to power

    Gorbechev came to power in 1985. Due to his cooperation with Ronald Regan, the US and USSR never fought in the Cold War. It also winded the war down.
  • Berlin Wall Takedown

    East Berlin announces take down of wall. One year later Germany Unites. Even though most of the wall was destroyed overnght, some of it is still being taken dowm.
  • German Unification

    After World War 2 Germany split into 2 countries. In East Germany in 1990 the vote to reunify won its election. Germany reunified October 3 , 1990 in west Germany.
