The Arms Race
After the testing of atomic bombs the two super powers Russia and the U.S. started an arms race for the most powerful weapons in the world. The U.S. gained the lead with more nuclear weapons but it became clear that any attack with these weapons would be terrible. -
Nuremberg Trails
After WWII ended the Allies worked together to get rid of the remaining Nazis so they conducted the Nuremberg trails from 1945-1949. More than 200 Nazis were tried and several dozen were given the death sentence for their part in the Holocaust. -
Truman Doctrine
Due to the threats from the Soviet Communists President Truman established a doctrine that declares the United States will provide aid to oppose the spread of communism. -
Marshall Plan
Soon after Truman released his doctrine George Marshall provided $13 billion to help Western Europe have a fast economic recovery from the war. -

Berlin airlift
The Soviets established blockade on every supply line into West Berlin so the West developed a plan to provide back the vital supplies by dropping them prom the air. -
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an alliance between the U.S., Canada, and most Western European countries that was created to counter the Soviet power. -
Hydrogen Bomb
In 1952 the U.S. tested the first hydrogen bomb. The test had great results totally vaporizing an island, even with this great success it was short lived as Russia started testing their own bombs. -
Sputnik
The arms race entered into a new phase when the Soviets launched a satellite into space. This launched put fear into the U.S. because it seemed Russia has gained the lead. -
Invasion of Cuba
In an attempt to over throw Castro the U.S. secretly trained 1,500 Cubans to conduct a revolt but the invasion failed. -
