  • United Nations Formed

    The United Nations was formed to maintain peace. There were 50 countries involved.
  • Truman Doctrine

    President Truman established that the US would assist any democratic country under threat. This shifted the US role in the war from withdrawal to intervention.
  • Hollywood 10

    10 Motion-picture producers, directors, and screenwriters appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee and refused to answer questions about communist affiliations. They were arrested.
  • Marshall Plan

    President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948, AKA the Marshall Plan. It proposed that the US would provide economic assistance to postwar Europe.
  • Nato Formed

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949. Their job was to protect its members from potential communist threats from the Soviet Union.

    The Korean War was the first military action of the Cold War. It began when North Korean soldiers came across the border into South Korea.
  • Space Race/Sputnik

    The space race was the competition over space exploration between the US and the USSR. The US technically won the Space Race when they landed on the moon.
  • Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs was a failed attack launched by the CIA during the Kennedy Administration. It was an attempt to push Cuban leader Fidel Castro from power.
  • Berlin Wall goes Up

    The Berlin Wall was a barrier that was built separating West Berlin from East Berlin. It was built to keep East Germans from escaping to the West.
  • US Enters Vietnam War

    In 1965, 3,500 US troops came ashore at Da Ning in South Vietnam. There were already 25,000 US Military advisers in South Vietnam but this marked the beginning of the US involvement in the war.
  • Soviets Invade Afghanistan

    in 1978 the Afghanistan Government was overthrown and formed close ties with the Soviet Union. After a series of uprisings, the Soviets invaded the country
  • Berlin Wall Comes Down

    On November 9th, 1989, An East German Communist Party spokesman announced a series of new policies regarding border crossings. Soon after, East Berliners rushed to the gates of the wall to cross. It marked the first step towards German reunification.
