Soviets invade Afghanistan
The Soviets invade Afghanistan on December 24, 1979, under the pretext of the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty of 1978. The Soviets organized a large military airlift into Kabul that involved around 280 transport aircraft and three divisions of nearly 85,000 men in each. The Soviets were able to secure Kabul a few days after they invaded. -
