Berlin Blockade
The Soviets blocked off all access routes to Berlin so that the Allies couldn't get to their sectors of Berlin. The Soviets agreed to lift the blockade only if the Allies withdrew it's newly introduced currency. The Allies countered with the Berlin airlift. -
Berlin Airlift
Allies flew in supplies to western Berlin due to the fact that all other routes into Berlin were blocked off by the Soviets in order to force the Allies into withdrawing the currency that they introduced in Berlin. -

Allied countries form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in an effort against communism. It was designed to keep countries of western Europe free. -
NSC-68 is Written
NSC-68 was a document by the National Security Council that suggested a massive buildup of arms to protect against a communist attack. This buildup caused the arms race to begin. -
Chinese Civil War Ends
The Chinese government was fighting against communist forces led by Chairman Mao, the communists got a lot of support from poor farmers because communists take everybody's land and money and split it up equally. The Communists eventually won this war in May of 1950. -

President Truman fires General MacArthur
President Truman fired General MacArthur over a disagreement in how to handle the war in Korea. MacArthur wanted a full scale war in order to defeat the communists while Truman wanted to keep it domestic and avoid war. -
The Warsaw Pact is Created
The Soviets form the Warsaw Pact in answer to NATO's formation in 1949. -
Launching of Sputnik
Sputnik was the first Artificial satelite to ever be launched into space, and it was done so by the Russians. This sparked the Space race, which was a rush between America and Russia to see who could get to and do things in space first. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
Russia positioned misiles in Cuba aimed toward the U.S. in a two week scare. The missles were eventually taken down, and there was no confrontation.
