US U-2 Spy Plane shot down over Russia
A Special U-2 spy plane was shot down by Russian troops. Despite the Francis Powers was said to have been trained to use self destruct system to avoid capture, there was still mystery of the disappearing of the plane. The air surveillance deteriorated the relations between the two super powers.

1961 August 17 : Construction of Berlin Wall begins
The construction of Berlin Wall began on August 17, 1961. It then formed a barrier that divided Germany into East and West Germany. It construction of the wall formally was a symbol of the Cold War. Its construction is regarded as a catalyzer for the following confrontation between the US and Soviet Union.

1962: U.S. involvement in Vietnam increases
The US has always been involved in the conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region. In 1962, US began to increase its deployment of troops in Vietnam in fighting against communist forces. The increasing deployment indicates that the US was adopting a more radical containment policy against Communism spread in Asia.

President Kennedy assassinated in Dallas, Texas
President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 when he was travelling with his wife in a presidential motorcade in Dallas. His assassination evoked stunned reactions from worldwide. It was in the middle of the Cold War, and the US then was in a great emergency.

President Richard Nixon visits China
President Nixon’s 1972 visit to PRC was considered to be ice-breaking step in increasing the relations between the two countries. It indicated the end of 25 years separation between the two sides. It is a great step forward for US in the Cold War.
