World War II ends in Europe and the U.S. drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The was a Postdam Conference that included Truman, Stalin, and the British which was a discussion on what to do with Nazi Germany after the war has ended. -
Berlin Airlift Begins
In response, the Western Allies organised the Berlin airlift to carry supplies to the people in West Berlin. -
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is created.
NATO was a intergovermental military alliance that created an alliance between 28 countries including North America and Europe. This aalliance promised to have peace between eachother and to back eachother in case of attack. -
Warsaw Pact formed
Formally called NATO, the Warsaw Pact. The Soviet Union and seven of its European satellites sign a treaty establishing the Warsaw Pact, a mutual defense organization that put the Soviets in command of the armed forces of the member states. -
Soviets launch first man-made satellite
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite.The satellite makred the beginning of the space age and this was a great accomplishment for the Soviets to say they were the first. -
Fidel Castro comes to power
Fidel Castro becomes premier of Cuba and begins a communist government in Cuba. Fidel Castro is well known for improving Cuba including reducing literacy and improving public heath care. -
Bay of Pigs invasion Begins
The Bay of Pigs invasion begins when a CIA-financed and -trained group of Cuban refugees lands in Cuba and attempts to topple the communist government of Fidel Castro. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion Ends
\Kennedy gave the go-ahead for the attack. On April 17, 1961, around 1,200 exiles, armed with American weapons and using American landing craft, waded ashore at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba. The attack was a complete failure and for many years to come Kennedy was punished for his poor descion. Pointless lives were lost and it only increased Castro's confidence and supoprt. -
East Germany builds the Berlin Wall
East Germany built the Berlin Wall to keep Western “fascists” from entering East Germany and undermining the socialist states. This resulted in extreme problems between East and West Germany. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 between the U.S. officials and the Soviet learders over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores. This caused great concern for the United States and for the rest of the world. -
China explodes its' first atomic bomb
China becomes the 5th known holder of an atomic bomb. This was unsurprising to the United States because they had wind that they were working with the Soviet Union to build one of their own. -
Nixon visits China
President Nixon is the first president to visit China. Nixon attempts to visit China to smooth over relations between the United States and China. This ended a 25 year seperation between the two countries. -
Berlin Wall Demolished
The Berlin Wall is destroyed and Germany becomes whole once again. President Reagan challanges Germany to tear down the wall by giving a statement called "Tear down this wall!" Shortly after Germany tore down the wall. -
Germany Reunited
East Germany West Germany are reunited together to create one Germany. This was important to the country and Berlin became the capital. -
Soviet Union Abolished
The Soviet Union is abolished and Boris Yeltsin becomes President. He was the 8th and last leader of the Soviet Union.
