The Trman Doctrine
Harry S Truman requested $400 million of military and economic funding to help aid Greese and Turkey and created a doctrine that carried the U.S. diplmacy for 40 years. -
Marshal Plan
President Truman signed the ERA (Economic Recovery Act), later know as the Marshall Plan after George Marsall. George proposed that that the U.S. sould help by gving economic assistance to restore the base economy of post war Europe. -
Creation of NATO
Made up of Belgium, Denmark, Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Canda, France, Iceland, Luxenbourg, Norway, the United States, and Portugul. Later Greece, Turkey, and the Federal Republic of Germany joined too. NATO agreed that an attack on any of the members would be considered an attack on all members. -
The Chinese Revolution
Chinas' mainland falling to communism, and having Mao Zedong as as the leader, caused a suspension of U.S diplomatic ties with the Peoples Republic of China (PRC). Chiang, a nationalist fighter, was forced te flee to Taiwan to plan for the effort to retake the mainland. -
Korean War
South Korea and a small US force as hit by a sneak attack and the perpetratorsquickly headed for the capital city of Seoul. The U.S. response was to send a resolution to the U.N. security council requesting military back-up for South Korea. With the resolution in hand, Harry Truman sent over U.S. land, air, and sea forces to enage in "police action" -
Warsaw Pact
Got it's name because it was signed in Warsaw, the member stated included the Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. This treaty stated that the member states should come to defend of any other member state if it's attacked by an outside force. -
Vietnam War
A war in which North Korea primarily on guerilla warfare, and the South largely used air strikes and "seek and kill" strategies. The war did not end until very late in April of 1975 with the death toll up at approximately five million vietnamese people, along with 58, 159 american soldiers. -
Soviets Launch Sputnik
Was the first artificial Earth satellite. It was a 23 in. diameter shiny metal sphere, with four external radio antennae to broadcast radio pulses. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957. It was visible all around the Earth and its radio pulses detectable. The surprise success precipitated the American Sputnik crisis, began the Space Age, and triggered the Space Race. -
Bay of Pigs
This was a unsuccessful raid of Cuba in an attempt to verthrow Fidel Castro. The U.S. majorly overestimated the support from the Cuban people , and failed to disable the Cuan Air Force. All this turning into a counter productive mission which only raised th tension in the cold war. -
The Berlin Wall Goes Up
East German soldiers laid down more than 30 miles of barbed wire barrier through the heart of Berlin. East Berlin citizens were forbidden to pass into West Berlin, and the number of checkpoints in which Westerners could cross the border was drastically reduced. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The result of this crisis was the Soviet Union withdrew their missiles from Cuba and the U.S. withdrew certain missiles from Turkey and Italy. An agreement was made with the Soviet Union that the U.S. would not invade Cuba without direct provocation. Castro's position as a Cuban leader was strenghtened as well. -
SALT #1
Essentialy this thing stopped the production of ballistic missile launchers. It also permitted an increase in SLBM launchers but only to a limited numberfor each party, upon the dismantling of the corresponding number of ICBM launchers. There was also a SALT #2. -
U.S. Invades Grenada
Under president Ronald Reagans order, a team of Marines invaded Grenada in order to secure the safety of some 1000 Americans, mostly students at the island medical school, whom were thought to be under threat of the nations Marxist regime. The Grenada Government was overthrown in just over a week. -
German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
The East German People, though great courage and long lasting peaceful/non-violent resistance, eventually brought the Berlin Wall crashing down. After it came down thousands of people, friends, family, and more, fell into eachothers arms in joy after being separated for 28 years. -
Dissolution of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union fell apart into fifteen separate countries, this victory was seen by the west as a victory for freedom and a triumph of Democracy over Totalitarianism. It also gives evidence of how Capitalism is superior to Socialism.
