Yalta Confrence
When WW1 ended, the heads of the government divided Germany into four zones. East Germany and the city was divided between the East and West sectors and Berlin was in the middle of the Soviet zone. This connects to the theme Social because The Big Three, FDR, Churchill, and Stalin agreed to govern Germany Jointly. This impacted the cold war because it gave the Soviet Union control to Eastern Europe and made west feel they were going to increase communism. -

This was a council for mutual economic assistance and its purpose was to provide aid to communist nations so that they wouldn’t take the money from the US. This was the Soviets response to the marshal plan. This fits with the theme Political because the USSR is in power by helping the other countries. This impacted the war because it made the US mad because they don’t want communism to spread. -
Truman Doctorine
President Truman from the US helped aid Greece and Turkey from falling to communist insurgents. This was successfully done when Truman gave them money to help so communism wont spread to other areas. This fits with the theme Political because the President with power requested $400 million from the congress to help Greece and Turkey. This impacted the cold war because they wanted to contain communism and all eastern European countries would fall by it. -
Marshall Plan
A Secretary of state named George Marshall proposed program to help rebuild Europe after WW2. The U.S sent about $13 billion to Europe from 1948 to 1952 but the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe did not accept the money. This connects to the theme Geographic because the U.S was trying to restore Germany’s environment and stuff that was destroyed by the War. -
Berlin Airlift
This was a blockade of Berlin that ended in May 1949, where the U.S and British planes airlift 1.5 million tons of supplies to the residents of West Berlin. The Soviet Union lifts the blockade after 200,000 flights. This fits the theme economical because it is bringing a variety of supplies to give Berlin. This impacted the war because it made the USSR look like an enemy to others. -
Propaganda
The USSR were efficient in influencing public opinion through media. One example of this was Vladimir Lenin, you could find his image mostly everywhere, in paintings and public buildings. Soviet Propaganda artists also emphasized industrial advancement as the USSR was under communism. This fits the theme Artistic because propaganda used art to portray the countries beliefs. This impacted the cold war because countries tried to support their ism with the support of propaganda. -
Korean War
Koreans crossed 38th parallel in 1950 and hoped for Korea to unite as a communist nation. The war ended in 1953 and it ended with North and South Korea split at the 38th parallel without spreading communism. This fits the theme social because China and the USSR gave aid and military support to the North by socializing. This impacted the war because they didn’t not successfully spread communism. -
Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union led military alliances and forced 7 eastern European “satellites” to join. This pact was an opponent to NATO, the American capitalists and any attempts to leave was disloyal. This fits under the theme Phycological because people were forced to join or else they were not welcomed. This impacted the war because they started to have tension between the US and the USSR. -
American coins and curency
President Dwight Eisenhower promoted religion since he was a patriotic and believed that without god there was no government. He was against communisms and believed that they were against god, so he put “under god” under the Pledge of allegiance and “in god we trust” on the currency and coins. This fits under the theme Religious because Eisenhower believed that a Godless communism would destroy life. This impacted the war because it created tension with the USSR which were communists. -
Cuban Revolution
Castro overthrew a corrupt government and took over all major industries then later installing a totalitarian communist regine with USSR support. The US overthrew him by training more than 1,000 Cubans but failed. This fits the theme psychological because the U.S made the Cubans train to attempt overthrowing Castro. This impacted the war because they were not able to shrink communism. -

My definition of the Cold war would be a battle of the forces of democracy and the forces of communism that took place all cross the war. One image that comes to mind when I think about the Cold War are nuclear weapons, this is because they were a huge part of the war and though we fought conventional wars we were terrified of nuclear options being exercises. -

Yes, I was terrified during the cold war because of the nuclear weapons. It was not always the first thing I thought about because I was also a regular college kid who thought about friends and family, but it was always in the back of your mind. -
How old were you when the Cold War ended? What were your thoughts and feelings about the end of the Cold War?
I was in college when the cold war ended. I had a lot of Disbelief. I had an uncertain feeling because communism fell and people were determined that I never would. People were very cautious because they weren’t sure. It took a while to have the feeling of winning and a desire to celebrate but I always have a feeling of disbelief as well. when you live when the common enemy, you defined yourself with the terms with the enemy. -
Space Race
A competition between the USSR and the US too see who was the most technology advanced. Some examples of this race are Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, a win for the US. In April 12, 1961, Russia had a win with a soviet hero. This fits the theme intellectual because the countries were fighting technology wise to see who was more advanced. This impacted the war because it created tension between the two. -
The Olympics
The USSR beat the US in 1972 in the gold around final resulting in a sore of 51-50. The US beat the Soviet Union in the semifinals of the 1980 winter Olympics. This fits Cultural because they do this every 6 years and it’s something they enjoy doing. This impacted the war because it created tensions between Russia and the US. -
Mikhail Gorbachev
The general secretary of the communist party of the Soviet Union. He believed the war was the product of mistrust between the US and the Soviet Union. This connects to the theme intellectual because he created new ideas that helped the USSR. This impacted the war because he allowed more choice and freedom to the public. -
Putins 3rd win
He is a Russian leader who is winning the post-cold war after Russia faced a united Europe, an expanded NATO alliances, and about 4 more years of tension with the US. The CIA claims that Putin’s hackers worked to help elect Donald trump. The Soviet-style propaganda is back and its good news for him. This is a current event because Russia and the US are still in a neutral conflict that hasn’t ended.
