  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    This was originally a meeting to re-establish the nations of war-torn Europe. But somehow Yalta became the subject of intense controversy. Yalta was the second of three war conferences (The Big Three) represented by Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin. This meeting made the leaders realize they had completely different views on everything.
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    Hiroshima an important Japanese military center was bombed by a B-29 bomber named Enola Gay, this was an atomic bomb named Little Boy on August 6, 1945. Nagasaki was bombed three days later on August 9,1945 by a second bomb named, Fat Man. Appoxamately 200,000 people died as a result of injuries and radiation poisoning.
  • Iron Curtain Speech

    Iron Curtain Speech
    Winston Churchill gave a speech called the "Iron Curtain" in Fulton, Missouri in March 1946. During this speech he talked about the "iron curtain" which was the division of Europe. The two regions Europe was now divided into were both political, Western Europe was mostly democratic and Eastern Europe was communist. Joseph Stalin however took Churchill's speech as a "call to war".
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was a statement that asked Congress for $400 million in economic and military aid for Greece and Turkey. This doctrine helped to prevent Soviet influence from spreading. The $400 million was sent to Greece and Turkey between 1947 and 1950.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan helped to revive European hopes. Over a four year time period 16 countries recieved $13 billion in aid. These countries included: Great Britain, France, Italy, West Germany, Holland, Austria, Belgium/Lux., Greece, Denmark, Norway, Turkey, Ireland, Sweden, Portugal, Yugoslavia, and Iceland.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Korean War was a surprise attack on South Korea by North Korea across the 39th parallel. On June 27 President Truman ordered troops stationed in Japan to support the South Koreans. The combined forces of U.S. troops and South Korean troops were led by Douglas MacArthur.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    The Vietnam war lasted about 19 years. This was a war on communism. South Vietnam was anti-communist while North Vietnam was communist. This effected the Cold War because it caused more tension between communist people and non communist people.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
    The Soviets launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite. It traveled the Earth at 18,000 miles per hour circling Earth every 96 minutes. This shocked Americans and caused them to start developing their own space program. They later launched their first satellite on January 31, 1958.
  • U-2 Incident

    U-2 Incident
    A U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union airspace. This was a CIA mission to spy on the Soviet Union. This event is one of the main reasons why America joined in the Cold War.
  • Berlin Wall Built

    Berlin Wall Built
    The Berlin Wall was built to stop the flow of refugees frokm East to West Berlin. Most of the refugees were trying to escape from communist rule. The wall surrounded West Berlin. This wall was a concrete wall with barbed wire fence surrounding the top. Also to prevent refugees from entering there were guard dogs and guards with machine guns monitoring around the wall at all times. This effected the Cold war because it stopped the flow of people seeking freedom from communist rule.
