Winston Churchill's "iron curtain" speech
Winston Churchill gave this speech in Fulton, Missouri and he declared that an "iron curtain" had fallen on Europe. By saying "iron cutain" he meant that the Soviets had cut off Eastern Europe from the west. Behind the curtain, Churchill says there lay the countries of Eastern Europe. -
Truman Doctrine
The Truman Docrine was proposed to congress and it was passed. The Truman Doctrine is a commitment to help nations threatened by communism and Soviet expansion. -
Marshall Plan
Greorge Marshall proposed this plan to provide massive economic aid to Europe. His plan was at first resisted in congrss, but was later approved and the resistance dissapeared. -
Berlin Blockade
The Berlin Blockade was Stalin's response to the Wes't plans for West Germany. Soviet troops rushed into position around the edge of West Berlin. Overnight they created a blockade stopping all highway traffic, railroads, and water routes through East Germany to West Berlin.West Berlin and it's 2 million people were cut from all of their vital supplies. -
Berlin Airlift
The Berlin airlift was West Berlin's way around the blockade. They were having goods droped into the country for more than 10 months. Stalin ended their blockade. -
NATO
NATO means North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The agreement stated that an armed attack against any of the member nations will be considered an attack against all. The NATO nations created a large Military force. -
Victory of Chinese Communists
Mao Zedong formed a new communist state on Taiwan and the United States recognized it as a ligitmate government of all China.China and the Soviet Union now had a powerful ally in Aisa. -
The Korean War
The armies of North Korea crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea and South Korea's army was no match for the Northern army. Truman Believed that the invasion was supported by the Soviet Union.Truman never had congress declare war but he was having help sent to Korea. -
General Douglas MacArthur fired
Truman and MacArthur disagreed a lot and MacArthur sent a letter to congress saying he was being held back from doing his job.Truman fired him from his job in Korea and it caused many protests in the United States.
