    Yalta Conference
    This was a meeting between the "Big Three" - FDR, Churchill, and Stalin. In this meeting they discussed the separation of Germany. This separation led to issues later as the countries were now all next to each other and actions would occur much faster. This is Geographic as it is the separation of territory. Picture - Link text
  • Truman Doctirine

    Truman Doctirine
    Truman was against communism, and the countries Greece and Turkey were in trouble of being taken over by it. So Truman said that these countries should be supported financially. This economic event resulted in 400 million dollars being requested to help these countries. This showed that Truman was against communism which would result in some countries that were against his thinking. Picture - Link Text
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    George Marshall proposed to rebuild the European countries that were damaged from the war. This economic event resulted in almost 13 billion dollars to support some countries. This caused "dollar enslavement" and some countries would end up owing the US a "favor." Picture - Link text
  • Berlin Airlift/Blockade

    Berlin Airlift/Blockade
    Russia’s response to the merger of the French, USA and UK partitions of Berlin was to cut all road and rail links to that sector. This meant that those living in Western Berlin had no access to food supplies and faced starvation. Food was brought to Western Berliners by US and UK airplanes, an exercise known as the Berlin Airlift. This event of separation from other countries was Intellectual but it made it clear that Russia was still on it's own and would result in issues between countries.

    Korean War
    This was the date that North Korea invaded South Korea and began the Korean War. Different countries came to the aid of either North or South Korea, this event was cultural as the North and South Koreans of the common culture were at war.   • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    A force of Cuban exiles, trained by the CIA, aided by the US government attempted to invade Cuba and overthrow the Communist government of Fidel Castro. The attempt failed. This Political event resulted in a loss of connection between the US and Cuba that continued on for a long time. Picture - Link text
  • Cuban Revolution

    Cuban Revolution
    Cuban nationalist Fidel Castro took government control over all major industries and installed a totalitarian communist regime with the support of the Soviet Union. The corrupt government was overtaken and out of throne. This cultural event was a momentous occasion in history for Cuba. This later lead to issues between US and Cuba. Picture - Link text
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    A US spy plane reported sighting the construction of a Soviet nuclear missile base in Cuba. President Kennedy set up a naval blockade and demanded the removal of the missiles. War was avoided in Cuba which resulted in Cuba not being attacked by Russia or the US. This event was political as large political decisions had to be made during this phase. Picture - Link text
  • JFK Assasination

    JFK Assasination
    JF Kennedy was assassinated while on a visit to Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder but there has always been speculation that he was not a lone killer and that there may have been communist or CIA complicity. This event was a large Political event in america, mostly affected America as he was a great president and was now dead. Picture - Link text
  • Beginning of Vietnam War

    Beginning of Vietnam War
    This was the beginning of the Vietnam War. On this date 150,000 US soldiers were sent to Vietnam and this resulted in war. This Geographic event added to where the Cold War was taking place. Picture - Link text
  • Space Race

    Space Race
    The US and Russia were trying to get technologically ahead of the other by being the first to the moon. US Apollo 11 landed on the Moon and Neil Armstrong became the first man on the Moon. This event was Intellectual as many technological advances were made, it lead to a stronger rivalry between Russia and America. Picture - Link text
  • SALT

    SALT
    SALT was an acronym for - Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty signed between the US and USSR. This was made to limit warfare in some countries. This was intellectual since they were coming up with an agreement to limit warfare. It was important to the war as it was one of the first steps taken to stop it. Picture - [Link text](
  • Afghanistan

    Afghanistan
    On this date, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and began war inside of it. Afghanistan hasn't been the same since, there are constantly Talibans, bombs and other threats of war inside Afghanistan. This event is geographic as it included another country into the war and there are more war grounds. Picture - Link text
  • Olympics Boycott

    Olympics Boycott
    A number of countries including the USA boycotted the summer Olympics held in Moscow in protest at the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Other countries including Great Britain participated under the Olympic flag rather than their national flag. This event was important because it extended the rivalries of countries during the war.
  • End of Soviet Union

    End of Soviet Union
    Russia formally recognised the end of the Soviet Union. The collapse of communism led to much of the Soviet government to reform. This is political as the government collapsed and it was the true ending to the cold war. Picture - Link text
  • Interview With Father

    Interview With Father
    Question #1 - When he heard the words "cold war" he said that it reminded him strongly of the Olympics boycott. He was around my age at the time and it was a huge deal around the US.
    Question #2 - He was born in 1966 and was around 20 whenn it ended, he remembers talking about it ending in one of his classes at UW.
    Question #3 - The 1980 "Miracle on Ice" he will never forget the moment when the Americans beat the soviets in their own game.
