A major restructuring of the United States government's military and intelligence agencies following World War II. This increased tension because we were helping foreign countries fight the Soviet Union. -
Marshall Plan
Donating to European countries to help rebuild war torn countries. This decreased tension because we were helping to rebuild Europe. -
Berlin Airlift
Berlin was also divided into four sections. In June 1948, the Russians wanted Berlin all for themselves. They believed it would make it impossible for the people who lived there to get food or any other supplies and would eventually drive Britain, France and the U.S. out of the city for good. Instead of retreating from West Berlin, however, the U.S. decided to supply their sectors of the city from the air. This created tension because we just brought in supplies and waited for them to pull back. -
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty. It created tension because it was an alliance between countries in preparation to fight communism. -
Korean War
The Korean War began when North Korea invaded South Korea. The United Nations, with the United States as the principal force, came to the aid of South Korea. China, with assistance from the Soviet Union, came to the aid of North Korea. This increased tension because we got involved and started fighting -
Warsaw Pact
Was a collective defense treaty among the Soviet Union and seven other Soviet satellite states in Central and Eastern Europe. This created tension because this was another alliance with a big world power. -
Interstate Highway System
Is a network of controlled-access highways that forms a part of the National Highway System of the United States. Increased tension because we could transport weapons from one side of the U.S in a quicker time. -
Eisenhower Doctrine
This promised military and economic aid to any Middle Eastern Country to help resist communistic control. It added tension to the Cold War because we were helping other countries to fight the Soviet Union. -
Sputnik
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit. This added tension because we thought the Soviet Union were going to ballistic missiles at us. -
U-2 Incident
During the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower and the premiership of Nikita Khrushchev, a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down while in Soviet airspace. It added tension to the Cold War because the Soviet Union thought we were spying on the and we said we didn't know anything about it. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a failed military invasion of Cuba undertaken by the CIA. This greatly increased tension because this had our name printed all over it and it was really close to starting war. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Constructed by the German Democratic Republic. This increased tension because it separated west Berlin and East Berlin. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
A 13 day standoff about politics and weapons. It increased tension greatly almost creating WWIII. -
Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
This banned any nuclear testing above land. This decreased tension because we could only test nukes above water.
