Truman Doctrine
This document was derived from a speech given by Truman. This document stated that the United States of America would give help to any democratic nations under threat from authoritarian forces.

NATO
NATO is established. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO for short is established between 12 different countries. The twelve countries were Great Britian, France, The US, Canada, Belgium, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, Portugal, and Luxemburg. This was a military alliance designed to defend these countries against Soviet aggression. This also helped in creating a greater American influence in Europe.

Communists win Chinese Civil War
The civil war fought within China comes to an end and the communists win. China is now a huge and powerful communist country.

US Enters North Korea
The United States and other nations go into North Korea to help fight communism. Up until then, the Korean peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel between the United States and the Soviet Union. North Korean troops invaded the south, which was seen as a breach of peace. Many Americans did not support our entry into the war.

Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union signs a treaty with seven other European nations. This treaty essentially gives the Soviet Union control of the armed forces of East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovackia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, and Poland.

Fidel Castro
Castro is sworn in as the premier of Cuba. He immediately installs a commmunist government. Cuba is very close to the US and this raises concern.

Bay of Pigs Invasion
This was a failed CIA invasion of Cuba and was intend to over throw Castro. News of the first attack became public and Kennedy was forced to cancel the second attack. Castro ordered a counterattack and imprisoned for 20 months. The disaster lead to a major strain on the US and Cuba relationship as well as discouraged some US citizens.

Berlin Wall
East Germany began the building of the Berlin Wall. The wall's purpose was to divide the city from East and West and prevent refugees from leaving East Berlin. The wall is a symbol of the Cold War and you can still buy pieces of it.

Cuban Missile Crisis
The US discovered Cuba had created Nuclear weapons. In an effort to quarantine Cuba, Kennedy planned to surround Cuba with ships so the the Soviet Union couldn't deliver any supplies. No one knew how the Soviet leader would react to this, and for fifteen days the country panicked over the possiblilty of a Nuclear War. An agreement formed that the United States would not invade cuba and the soviets would dismantle those weapons.

US sends troops to Vietnam
First troops that were sent into South Vietnam. There was a communist party and the United States decided to help the other side in order to prevent a communist state. This was more of a civil war that the US became involved in, many Americans were against this war and actually fled the country to get out of the military draft.

War in Vietnam Ends
South Vietnam, the side supported by the US, surrenders to communist forces.

China and US establish relations
Two countries established diplomatic relations with the agreement that the US would remove its troops and ties with Taiwan as well as terminate the mutual defense treaty.

Tiananmen Square Protests
Student led demonstrations in China exposed issues with the Chinese government which lasted for seven weeks. On the fourth of June, military action was taken and the day is now nicknamed as the June 4th massacre.

Fall of the Berlin Wall
Spokesman for East Germany decided to allow for people to cross between East and West Berlin. This was an incredible day, people fled through the checkpoints to be on the other sides. It took almost another full year for the wall to come down, but symbolically, the wall came down that night.

Fall of the Soviet Union
After the Berlin wall fell, many states started succeeding from the USSR and becoming independent. The Soviet Union was abolished and leader Boris Yeltsin became president. This marks the end of the cold war.
