Berlin Blockade and Airlift
The Berlin Blockade was a big thing during this time. Post World War II the Soviets took over Germany and then they blocked off all western roadways, and railways. This was a big issue. So then this caused the United States and other western European countries to drop in food from planes into Berlin where the people were being starved by Joseph Stalin. -
NATO
NATO was made to strengthen the western allies. This would be to help against an invasion by anyone apart of the Warsaw pact. The original members of NATO were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. -
Korean War
The Korean War was fought between North and South Korea. South Korea had the support of the United States. North Korea then had the support of 2 other Asian countries who had been Communist at the time. This was Communist Russia and China. Korea had split into two different states, because of their different political views. -
Sputnik
This was the first Satellite ever to be launched into space. This satellite was launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. It was only about the size of a beach ball and it was the beginning of the Space Race. -
The Space Race
The Space Race was started by the Soviets when they launched Sputnik into space. The United States got "jealous" they spent all of their time with using NASA to make the first spaceship to make it to the moon. The United States eventually made it to the moon and Neil Armstrong became the first person to step on the moon. There is proof that perhaps the United States faked the moon landing because they wanted to win badly. -
The U-2 Incident
This was when Gary Powers was flying a U-2 plane over a few different countries. These countries included the Soviet Union and China. On May 1, 1960 he was shot down by the Soviets. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
There was a US plane who spotted the destruction of a Soviet Nuclear base. War was averted on October 28th when the Russians agreed. The US agreed to stay out of Cuba. -
John F. Kennedy Assassination
John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. His killer Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder but there is still question as if he was the only murderer. -
The Vietnam War
Te United States sent 150,000 troops to Vietnam to fight. This was a big war that a lot of the United States citizens did not want to get into. They were really getting mad about our troops dying in this war that we "shouldn't" have gotten ourselves into. -
Poland
Martial law was declared to crush the Solidarity movement. Solidarity was declared illegal and then all of Poland's leaders were arrested. Then Poland continued to do this but did it in an underground organization.
