Berlin Blockade and Airlift
After WWII Germany was split into 4 separate sections with France, USA, Britain, and Russia. Berlin the capital which Russia had was also split in fourths which Russia didn't like. So they decide to cut off roads and highways so the other side couldn't get and food and supplies and would eventually those countries would let the split go. Instead they dropped it over them from a plane. -
Korean War
Russia and North Korea start to send forces to the 38th parallel and push to the south side. After the Truman doctrine we said we would fight any war against communism so it doesn't spread. The war ends up just being on the border so we don't get China into the war and maybe cause a WWIII. So we end the war with a armistice that is still in effect today with North Korea and the two countries are still split -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam war was North Vietnam facing South Vietnam. The North was Communist and the south was A democratic country. So the United States ends up joining the war so Communism didn't spread and would stop. This effect America worse on the home front with protest and riots this divides the United States this is one of the reasons why America withdraws from the war. North Vietnam then takes over the South and makes it Communist. -
The Space Race
The Race is between the USSR and USA the race starts with Russia winning both Satellite and First man in space. Then to keep America's hopes going JFK made his famous Moon speech. Later on we Have the first orbit around the moon and the first men on the moon. It ends with 4 failed lunar test by the USSR. -
U-2 Reconnaissance Plane
America flew a spy plane in a Russian air field and was shot down. The pilot and plane were recovered where the pilot was still alive and was found to be American. Eisenhower the president at the time had to tell the Soviets that they had been spying on them for several years now. Russia convince the powers of espionage to charge the pilot to 10 years in prison.He only stays 2 years because USSR and US decide to swap spies in the first ever spy swap. -
Bay of Pigs
The CIA had 1,400 ex Cubans invade Cuba. At the time Fidel Castro a Nationalist ruled over Cuba. The United States didn't want them to invade us or spread there beliefs. So the US tries to assassinate him several times it doesn't work so they send there Cuban forces and they get destroyed in a matter of day Castro had one and the US took a embarrassing loss. -
Non-Proliferation Treaty
This treaty was to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons in the world they though this would bring peace to nations. 190 nations end up signing this petition this was very important during this time because the US and USSR end up signing it so it brings down the terror of being nuked by each other. This treaty was not didn't come into effect until 1970 -
Soviet Afghan War
Afghanistan is in a civil war there county is Communist and Russia would like to keep it that way so they invade and with Afghani soldiers start pushing then the US started to help the rebels that were trying to over throw there government. So USSR couldn't declare war on the US they got training from neighboring nations and million of dollars from the US, Britain,and Saudi Arabia. The Soviets withdraw from the battle and leave that country a mess. -
Reagan visits the wall
President Reagan comes to west Berlin and notices the big wall that was there. After he saw this he made one of the most important speeches during the cold war, he challenged the USSR leader to open the gates. He said if they wanted to seek peace they should open the gates and walls -
Berlin wall comes down
The Berlin Wall was to keep the East Berlin to got to the west side. Many people from the East side would be killed because they would try to get to the Democratic West side by climbing going under or trying to run around it. After 28 years of the Berlin wall it finally came down and was opened up to both sides had a big party were people would break piece of the wall off with hammers and Pickaxes
