The Normandy landings were the main operations on D-day. America, Britain, and Canada landed on the beaches of Normandy. This invasion was one of the largest military assaults and needed lots of planning.

Cold War Containment
Containment was supposed to be the best defense against the Soviet. In the Long Telegram that George Kennan said he explained that there can be no agreements between parties that disagree. Because of this, America only had the choice the "long term, patient but firm and vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies."

Berlin Airlift
The capital of Germany, Berlin, was divided into the four sections. The Russians wanted all of Berlin so they closed all the transportation routes. Because of this the US brought in a large airlift with food water and medicine for everyone.

Berlin Blockade
The blockade was the first major international crises of the war. The Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies. They did it to limit the ability of France, Great Britain, and US to move to their sectors of Berlin. -
NATO
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The Communist expansion made the United States and 11 other Western nations to form the NATO. This provided the framework or the military. -
Arms Race
Arms race was a competition between nations for the advantage in the making of weapons between Soviet Union in the cold war. The first one was when France and Russia demanded the navel superiority of Britain. There were bad feelings between USA, Britain and Japan after the war which caused the first major arms treaty.

Domino Theory
The theory was a policy from Cold War. It suggested the government be communist in one nation would lead to takeovers of the communist in other states. It was called the Domino Theory because it would fall all in a row to every state.

Eisenhower Doctrine
Under the doctrine a country could have requested American economic assistance or aid. From the US military forces if the country was being threatened. The US made the doctrine because they thought the situation in the Middle East degenerated badly. -
Berlin Wall
The Communist government stated to build a barbed wire wall between east and west Berlin. The purpose of the wall was to keep fascists from entering. The wall was up untill November 9, 1989.

Fall of the Soviet Union
The soviet flag was sent over the Kremlin in Moscow. Lots of countries had already said they were no longer part of the Soviet Union. Instead they declared that they would establish a commonwealth of independent states.
