    When Greece and Turkey started to fall to communism, the President of the United states decided to aid both of the countries with $400. This relates to economy because he paid $400 to aid different countries.
  • Berlin Blockade

    In response to the democratic parts of Germany, the Soviets blocked all land and water access to the Capital of Germany, Berlin. The people of West Berlin would be cut off without help.
  • U.S and Soviets helping North and South Korea

    During the Korean war, UN Forces helped South Korea by giving them aid in war, while the USSR gave aid to North Korea.
  • Olympics

    At the time that Russia and the U.S were competing to be the best, The U.S had never lost a game in basketball for the Olympics. However, that changed when the USSR beat the U.S. The U.S defeated the Russian team in hockey, which was their main sport. This can relate to the cultural gaspire theme because Hockey was a big part of Russian culture and basketball was a big part of U.S culture.

    Fidel Castro overthrew the Cuban government and implemented a communist regime with the support of Russia. The U.S tried to overthrow the new Communist regime in a plan called the Bay of pigs invasion, but failed.

    Both Russia and the U.S started making forms of pop art in another attempt to one-up each other. Pop art is a form of art that is usually closely related to colors and expression. This topic relates to art because the U.S and Russia both were creating almost the exact same form of artwork.

    The US trained over 1,000 exiles in order to overthrow the communist regime. They tried to invade Cuba, but the mission failed and diplomatic relations were cut. This can relate to social because of the troops trying to invade other people's land.

    The USSR and U.S stated to compete in order to show who was more technologically advanced. Russian Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space, however the U.S sent the first man to the moon shortly after. This event relates to innovation because Russia and the U.S were trying to technologically out-do each other by innovating new technology and becoming more advanced very quickly.

    The Soviet Union sent Nuclear missiles into Cuba, which resulted in a blockade of Cuba from the U.S, and John F. Kennedy demanded that the missiles be removed. This relates to Geography because it was an event that directly effected A specific part of the world, and led to a blockade of Cuba from the U.S.

    The easing of political tension, also known as de'tente, happened while president Nixon and Soviet leader Brezhnev met to discuss the relations between the two countries. This ended in an agreement to strategic arms limitations and talks. This relates to the political gaspire theme because it is an ease in political tension between the two countries.

    Atheism was an epidemic in the USSR at the time. Lenin and Trotsky created a group called the "society of the godless" and it spread throughout Russia. This relates to religion because Atheism is a religion, or it was considered an "anti-religion" back then.
  • Berlin Wall

    Berlin Wall
    The Berlin wall was built to separate the Capitalist and Communist part of Berlin, Germany. Families were separated from each other and no one was allowed to cross the wall under any circumstance. Those that were caught trying to cross the wall were either jailed or shot on the spot. This relates to culture because it is the separation of two different cultures, and finally , when it was taken down, the bringing together of two cultures.

    In the elections of 2012, Putin won for the 3rd time. Many people think that the elections were rigged. This relates to the Psychological GASPIRE theme because if the elections were rigged, then it would be psychologically manipulative and would confuse and enrage the people, which it did.
  • Interview with Grandma

    She did not really know a lot about the cold war, but she remembers it was with Russia and they were afraid Russia would bomb them. She was a kid growing up during the war. The cold war did not effect her or her husband and she only remembers things being in the news. She never worried about it as a kid. They did go through lockdown drills in case a bomb was dropped.
