Berlin Airlift
The Soviet-controlled East Berlin set up a blockade from land, rail, and sea. It prevented goods from entering West Berlin. The UK, France, and the United States flew in planes with goods to help out the people of West Berlin. -

The US and 11 other western European countries signed and created this treaty. Provided the framework for the military standoff that continued throughout the cold war. -

Korean War
The Soviet-supported North Korea invaded the democratic South Korea. They were soon supported by the United States. Over a million casualties in war caused both sides to stop all war efforts. Both countries are still separated today ever after negotiations, that tried to unite the country, still didn’t work. -

Treaty that Soviet Union and its communist ¨neighbors¨ signed. A mutual defense that put the USSR in command of the member states. -

Vietnam War
Vietnam broke away from French control in 1954 to create their own communist government. The South Vietnam wanted to start a democratic government, instead. Fighting broke out in the 1960’s with the United States supplying guns and soldiers to South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supplied by the USSR and China. The United States pulled out of the war when the cost and casualties of war went over what was expected in 1973. The North prevailed in 1975. -
Sputnik
The first artificial satellite launched into space
by the USSR. Marked the start of the Space race between the US and the USSR. -
Construction of Berlin Wall
Communist party built a barbed wire and concrete wall, to keep the western fascists from undermining the socialist state. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Conflict where nuclear armed Soviet missiles were on Cuba, just 90 miles away from the US. Disaster was avoided when the USSR leader agreed to remove the missiles. -
Moon Landing
American Apollo 11 was launched into space.
It took about three days to get into lunar orbit then they set down to land on the moon. -
Destruction of Berlin Wall
People were allowed to cross the border freely. They brought hammers and picks and took down the wall. Known as the biggest street party in the world. East and West Germany were reunited about a year later.
