    RED SCARE
    This was the widespread fear of communism. This is what led to McCarthyism created by Joseph McCarthy who insisted that all communist that were in th US were plotting to takeover the US. It also led to a major transformation in HUAC. It started blackmail in the US. One of the most famous Black mail attempts in the US was the Hollywood 10. the red scare started early in 1919 but progressed and became worse in the 40's.

    HUAC
    House Committee on Un-American Activities. This committee's purpose was to investigate the full range of racial groups in the US including fascists and communists. Over time it transformed to focus on possible threat of communism in the US.

    The yalta conference was to discuss the fate of post-war europe. The confernce consisted of the 'Big Three'. (USSR-Stalin, US-FDR, abd GB- Churchill)

    This is in international organization that encourages cooperation among nations. The meeting took place in San Francisco, California. It consisted of representatives from the US and 50 other countries.

    POTSDAM CONFERENCE
    this was a meeting that was held among leaders of the alles near the end of WWII. Truman saw that communism had potential to spread into the post war world. Truman hoped to encourage Stalin to live up to agreements made at yalta conference. Stalin was not present and the Potsdam conference was unsuccessful.

    This served as a pledge to provide economic to countries threatened by communism. It also promoted assistance with the military. It was created by Pres. Truman.

    MARSHALL PLAN
    The marshall plan was created to plan for the reconstruction of europe after WWII. It was announced by the US secretary od state, George C. Marshall.

    The U.S. lived in fear during the cold war. They feared nuclear bombings from the USSR. They also feared that spies were present in the U.S. from the USSR. The CIA was formed to operate private investigations and to rid of spies and outside threats.
  • Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia

    Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia
    A coalition government was set up in Czechoslovakia. However, the Communists' leader Gottwald controlled the radio, the army, and the police. Gottwald became the prime minister and set up a secret police force. Non-Communists were quickly arrested. In 1948, Communist workers soon went on strike. The non-Communist minister Masaryk committed suicide and Gottwald took over the Czech. government.

    BERLIN BLACKADE/ BERLIN AIRLIFT.
    Stalin disagreed with the formation of West Germany. To stop the efforts, he created the berlin bllockade. Berlin was one of west Germany's largest suppliers. Railroad links were cut off as were telephones. The US reacted to stop the USSR in it's tracks. The US provided berlin with the berlin airlift. They dropped supplies to the city from the sky until the USSR gave in.

    NATO was created shortly after WWII. It consisted of 15 western nations that agreed an attck by pro communist countries on any 15 nations is an attack against all. USSR was one of the largest pro communist territories.
  • KOREAN WAR

    KOREAN WAR
    Armed forces from North Korea invade South Korea, setting off the Korean War. The United States, acting under the auspices of the United Nations, quickly sprang to the defense of South Korea and fought a violent, bloody, and frustrating war for the next three years. In the end the public found the concept of limited war difficult to understand or support and the Korean War never really gained popular support.

    VIETNAM WAR
    As the surprise attacks (tet offensive) between Viet Cong and the South Vietnamese continued, the U.S. continued to send additional advisers to South Vietnam. When the North Vietnamese fired directly upon two U.S. ships in international waters, Congress responded with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This gave Pres. Johnson the authority to escalate U.S. involvement in Vietnam. President Lyndon Johnson used that authority quickly and used vietnamization to send U.S. support to southern Vieatnam.

    Simular to the formation of NATO, the USSR created an alliance with soviet dominated countries of eastern europe. The only difference was all control was entirely under the USSR. It was also a military alliance.
  • U2 CRISIS

    U2 CRISIS
    In 1954 Frank Wisner of the CIA placed Richard Bissell in charge of developing and operating the U-2 spy plane. The U-2 was designed by a woman named Kelly Johnson.President Eisenhower gave permission for the U-2 to fly over Moscow and Leningrad. The U-2 was indeed a great success and within two years Richard Bissell was able to say that 90% of all hard intelligence about the Soviet Union coming into the CIA was "funneled through the lens of the U-2."

    The space race was a competition held between the US and USSR. It was to show who the alpha really was. Technology was a big deal and so was the unknown, so what better way to compete than send your own technology into the mysterious outer space.It led to america inventing NASA. the national space base that conducts all outer space missions, journeys, and experiments. It also led to the first launch of the satelite. To America's dismay it launched first from the USSR. It's name was Sputnik.

    The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an attempt that was unsuccesful by the U.S. to overthrow the government of the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Increasing friction between the U.S. government and Castro's leftist regime led Pres. Eisenhower to break off diplomatic relations with Cuba in January 1961.

    At the end of World War II, the Allied powers divided conquered Germany into four zones, each occupied by either the United States, Great Britain, France, or the Soviet Union.The same was done with Berlin, Germany's capital. Citizens of East Germany began prefusively emigrating. to cut down on the mass emigration the Belin wall was constructed at midnight on aug. 12.

    CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS
    After seven long days of guarded and intense debate in the United States administration, during which Soviet diplomats denied that installations for offensive missiles were being built in Cuba, President Kennedy, in a televised event, announced the discovery of the installations and concluded that any nuclear missile attack from Cuba would be regarded as an attack by the Soviet Union and would be responded to accordingly.
