The Truman Doctrine
Harry Truman, president of USA, gave a speech showing that the USA will back up Turkey and Greece and help them fight against communist attacks and uprisings. This is significant because some say it was the start of the cold war and also shows that USA is trying to stop communism from spreading. -
The Marshall Plan
This American Program aided European nations by giving them loans and to prevent nations from turning or being taken over by communism. This made it so that Communism couldn't spread any farther into Europe. -
Berlin Airlift
This was in response to the USSR blocking off West Berlin from the rest of the world. USA, Britian and France sent in supplies and food to west Berliners by airplane for almost a year until USSR released the blockade. This made the USSR look silly and bad to the rest of the world. -
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was set up to protect nations (against Communism) from an attack from USSR. The famous quote was, "an attack on one is an attack on all." This was significant because it made USSR not want to take over any nation that signed this because they'd start a war with America, Britian, and many other anit-communist nations. -
Korean War
A war between North Korea (supported by China and Russia) and South Korea (supported by USA) which was an indirect war between Russia and USA. The war ended in a near draw and no one gained anything but USA lost a lot of money on the war. -
Warsaw Pact
This was a mutatual defense treaty between many Communist Nations. This happened because of the creation of NATO by the capatalist nations which created alliances which was a cause that lead to WW2. -
Vietnam War
Vietnam was another indirect war between USA and Communism/ Sovet Union which lasted almost twenty years. USA lost the war and Vietnam was reunited as a Communist Nation. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
Bay of Pigs was an unsuccesful American Invasion on Cuba, where Armed Cuban Exiles were sent to Cuba to take out Cuba's leader, Castro. This fail made the USA look bad and weak. -
Fidel Castro in Cuba
Fidel was a cuban communist and anti-imperalist who took over cuba in July 1961. He formed Cuba into a militarist communist government. This was significant because USA had an enemy (cuba became allies with USSR) close to home just a a couple hundred miles of the coast, this caused the bay of pigs and cuban missile crisis. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
This Wall was built between East (USSR) Berlin and West (USA, France, Britian) Berlin. USSR said that it was to keep there socialist nation away from "facist" nation but to West Berlin it was the "Wall of Shame" and the USSR tried to isolate them from the West and to not allow immagriants leave USSR. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The USA found out that Cuba was building Sovet Nuclear Missile sites in Cuba most likley incase USSR would have to attack the USA. This was solved by reaching an agreement by having the USA take their missiles out of Turkey and Italy, and also having to never invade Cuba again. The USSR had to bring back all missiles to the Sovet Union. -
1972 Basketball Olympics
USA versuses USSR in the championship game. USA has never lost a game before and has one every gold medal since the start of Basketball in the Olympics. After 15 controversal seconds at the end of the game that I could go on and on about, USSR ended up winning on a last second lay-up marking the first time USA has lost. This gave something for USSR to cheer about and feel good about beating the undefeated USA basketball team. -
1980 USA Hockey Team
During the Semi-Finals of the olympics, in lake placid, NY, the USA hockey team defeated USSR. USSR at that time was labeled as the greatest hockey team ever being undefeated since 1954 until this game. USSR beat the USA team by 7 a couple months before this game. This gave USA something to cheer about that they defeated the unbeatable rival that was USSR. -
Fall of Berlin Wall and German Reunification
The wall was demolished reuniting West Berlin and East Berlin. West was controlled by USA, France, and Britian and the East by the USSR and same with Germany as a whole. This reunited West Germany and East Gernmany into just one nation. This is signifacant because it stop USSR's isolation against anything that isn't communist. -
Collapse of Sovet Union
The Sovet Union finally collapsed making all 15 of it's communist terriotores free. This happened because Gorbachev resigned and gave the whole government up and let down the Sovet Flag. This officaily ended the Cold War
