    The Yalta Conference was a meeting of leaders from the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and the U.S, to decide what would happen to Germany after WWII. This meeting split Germany into a democratic and a communist side, ultimately setting the idea of Anti-Communism in motion, and making a contribution to the development of the Cold War era.

In this speech he coined the phrase “Iron Curtain”, which was a metaphor for communism. This was the official acknowledgement of the Cold War beginning, after Stalin reacted to Churchill’s speech, and represented America’s hatred for communism.

    Marshall PlanThe Marshall Plan, or formally known as the European Recovery Program, was developed by Secretary of State, George Marshall. This plan revitalized European countries that were devastated in WWII, and made stronger bonds with America and European countries. He believed that the way to ensure “Political Stability” was to maintain the economies of the countries at risk, stable.

    Berlin Blockade

    Berlin BlockadeBecause of the Marshall Plan being enacted and various other reasons, the Soviets decided to block all U.S military supplies that were to come into Berlin via the Soviet Zone. At the time they were stationed there as part of the Marshall Plan and to finalize the set up of Germany’s government. Ultimately this prolonged blockade resulted in West Germany gaining a new government and soon became inducted into NATO, after the blockade was ceased.

    NATONATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was a group of 11 countries and the U.S, which were bound in an effort to stop the spread of communism. It was mainly a self defense mechanism for each of the countries, or a sort of insurance, to make sure they each were protected in the event of an attack from a communist country.

    McCarthyismVideoSenator Joseph McCarthy led a movement called McCarthyism, which was extremely Anti-Communist. In order to better his political career, he would accuse people of being communist supporters, even if there was no evidence to support such allegations. This caused many people to lose their jobs, respect, and jail time. These acts symbolized how much of a fear communism was in America during that time.

    Korean WarThe Korean War started because of troops from the northern side of Korea crossing the 38th Parallel into South Korea. The Soviets and other communist powers supported North Korea, and the Americans and other democratic powers supported South Korea. This invasion was the first military action taken in the Cold War. American troops entered the war for South Korea, because of fear that this might lead to war with bigger communist powers, or even WWIII.

    Warsaw PactThe Warsaw Pact was essentially the counter alliance group to NATO. It formed after NATO, and for many of the same reasons. This group put the Soviet Union in charge of all the armed forces of each of the member countries. It was primarily started however, when West Germany was inducted into NATO, and the Soviets saw this as a threat to their stability.

    SputnikSputnik was the first satellite ever launched into space, and was from the Soviet Union. This was during a time in the Cold War era known as the Space Race, and was a major turning point in for Space technology and exploration. This led to President Eisenhower starting the NASA program, and eventually the first Lunar Landing.

    U-2 IncidentPresident Eisenhower was suspicious and apprehensive of a possible nuclear attack from the Soviets, and to gain new intelligence on the U.S.S.R, he approved a operation by the CIA to use high altitude planes to observe and document the happenings of the soviets, or in other words, to spy. These planes were supposed to be undetectable, but somehow they were detected by the soviets, and the plane was shot down.

    End of USSRThe Soviet Union breaking up was ultimately the end to the Cold War era. It broke up due to internal disagreement and parts wanting individual freedom and sovereignty from the USSR. There were too many changes going on within the USSR, and conflicts were breaking out all over because of differing views.
