Suez Crisis
The Suez Crisis was a result of Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser trying to control and buy out the Suez Canal. When Nasser's efforts to control the Canal increased, Great Britain, France, and Israel decided to try and take back the Canal. Egypt owning the Suez Canal would simply give too much power to Nasser and someone had to intervene. -

Sputnik was the first satellite to be put into orbit around Earth. Significant because the Soivets were the ones who launched it. Represented the first half of the space race being over. The other half (sending a MAN to space) was yet to be completed. -

Putin was eventually the Pesident/Premier/Prime Minister of Russia, but was just starting to get involved wiht politics towards the end of the Cold War. Significant for obvious reason: He is the president of a world superpower.
