    Discovery Education partners with CMS to deliver a series of events to generate excitement and awareness - including a school assembly with Discovery Channel and Wildlife Expert, Jeff Corwin. This is followed by 100+ in-person facilitator “train-the-trainer” and classroom teacher workshops, Online professional development to reinforce and extend learning 80 webinars

    In January of 2009 the implementation of Discovery Education digital services expanded to 87 Title 1 elementary and middle schools. This strategic expansion was supported by awareness and foundation levels professional development as well as targeted support for school science leads
  • Student Scores Sky Rocket!

    Student Scores Sky Rocket!
    Dr. Gorman’s goal was a 3-5% gain in a very short time frame. However, this pilot program led to double-digit gains in science scores year-over-year in CMS. Composite retest scores on North Carolina’s science end-of-year exam for grades 5 and 8 increased by 44%. While these are impressive numbers, it is just the beginning. Discovery Education continues to work with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to enhance the curriculum in new meaningful ways to benefit Charlotte students.

    148 full days of Professional Development Delivered in 2010
    Professional development continued to support science leads as well as district curriculum leaders. . Model lessons provided teachers the opportunity to model research based instructional strategies in the classroom. Professional development activities were differentiated for teachers based on individual needs and skill level in the use of digital resources.

    CMS and Discovery Education Judge 3M Young Scientists
    CMS Science Supervisor, Cindy Moss, is named the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge judge and panelist. They Young Scientist Challenge is the nation’s premier science competition for students in grades 5-8. Students have the opportunity to win amazing cash prizes and once-in-a-lifetime trips. Over the last 13 years, more than 600,000 middle school students have participated in the competition.

    Principals Learn Best Practices
    CMS Principals Learn How To Embed Themselves into a Movie during the Discovery Education North East Zone Principal Workshop. Throughout the workshop Principals were exposed to interactive lesson plans and ideas that they could model for their staff. The principals received plenty of hands-on time, guidance from the Discovery Education team, and walked away with finished products.

    DEN SCI CON 2011 - Reed Timmer Keynotes
    DEN SCIcon 2011Cindy Moss delivers her presentation "Real Students, Real Teachers," to a national audience at the Discovery Educator Network SCIcon 2011. The DEN SCIcon is an online conference (with a twist) focused on providing participants with some of the most effective strategies for transforming their science classes through the meaningful and effective integration of digital media content.

    CMS NASA STEM Educators Workshop Series
    The Discovery Education team partnered with Wayne Fischer at CMS to deliver three workshops that blended science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) using NASA and Discovery Education resources. Throughout the day, participants conducted various experiments that married Discovery Education’s digital content (Writing Prompts, Video Segments and Quizzes) together with hands-on labs to create things like hot air balloons out of tissue paper.

    CMS Schools Place 1st and 2nd in the Discovery Education Quest for Curiosity
    Over 2500 U.S. and Canadian classrooms competed against one another and the clock to be one of the first teams to solve the Quest For Curiosity Challenge with 100% accuracy. Melanie Duncan of Torrence Creek Elementary (Grades 3-5) was one of the five grand-prize winners for this year's Quest for Curiosity. As a grand-prize winner she won a set of 30 OGIO book/laptop bags for her students as well as a Flip Cam for Melanie.

    CMS Hosts the Discovery Education Spring Virtual Conference
    On April 24, 2011 we challenged CMS educators to Think Outside the Book with thousands of educators from all over the world when we hosted the DEN Spring Virtual Conference in Charlotte, NC at the US National Whitewater Center. 50 Educators came from around CMS to participate in a day full of interactive sessions and networking. The group finished their sessions after lunch and then went white water rafting or explored the park with each other!

    Barringer Academic Center Wins Siemens/Discovery Education We Can Change The World
    We Can Change The World Winning Project Team “Passe/Herring” and their mentors Mindy Passe and Rachel Herring beat out more than 13,500 elementary students across the nation for the first place title in the 3-5 grade level of this year’s Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge, a national sustainability challenge that empowers young people to develop and share environmental solutions that can help change the world (www.wecanchange.com).
