Montgomery Ward Mail Order Catalog
Montgomery Ward was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872. Ward had conceived of the idea of a dry goods mail-order business in Chicago, Illinois, after several years of working as a traveling salesman among rural customers. He observed that rural customers often wanted "city" goods, but their only access to them was through rural retailers who had little competition and did not offer any guarantee of quality. Ward also believed that he could make a wide variety of goods available. -
Black Hills Gold Rush
The Black Hills Gold Rush began in 1874. The first arrivals were a force of 1,000 men led by George Armstrong Custer. They found small amounts of gold in present-day Custer, South Dakota, and looked for better-paying locations. They moved north, establishing the towns of Hill City, Sheridan, and Pactola. There wasn't much. Things changed when the miners stumbled across Deadwood and Whitewood Creeks in the northern Black Hills. By 1876, miners had claimed all the land. -
Chief Joseph - Nez Perce
Hinmatóowyalahtq̓it in Americanist orthography, popularly known as Chief Joseph or Young Josep, succeeded his father Tuekakas (Chief Joseph the Elder) as the leader of the Wal-lam-wat-kain band of Nez Perce, a Native American tribe indigenous to the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon, in the interior Pacific Northwest region of the United States. He led his band during the most tumultuous period in their contemporary history when they were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands.
