Clara takes a teaching exam
Clara Barton takes an exam. The exam will allow her to become a teacher. Many people thought Clara would make a great teacher, so Clara did become a teacher and ventually opened a school for young children. -

One of Clara's big influences was her mother. Her mother Sarah Barton died on July 19,1851. This was a very sad part of Clara's life. -

Clara is among a few of the first women to work in a patent office. She was employed as a clerk at a patent offic ein Washington D.C. this lasted from 1854 to 1857, but then her anti slavery opinions took her on a different path. -
Volunteer to help wounded soldiers.
Early in 1861 Barton returned to Washington, D.C. and, when the Civil War broke out, she was one of the first volunteers to appear at the Washington Infirmary to care for wounded soldiers. Barton shows an interest in helping the wounded. -
Barton Temporarly looses her eyesight.
Clara Baron temporarly lost her eyesight due to nervous exhaustion. Clara went back to the United States hoping to recoperate there. Due to a tragedy her condtion only worsened. -
Sally Barton dies
Clara's sister died on May 24, 1874. Clara had recently come backto the United States in hope of regaining her eyesige, which she had temporarly lost. The death of her sister, Sally, only worsened her condition. -
Clara Barton founded Red Cross
On May 21, 1881 Clara Barton founded the Red Cross. At the time Clara was 60 years old. Barton opened a way for people to volunteer and help injured people. -
Clara is elected President of The Red Cross
Clara Barton was elected President of The American Red Cross. At a meeting, which took place in Washington DC, people elected Clara to be the leader, or President, of the Red Cross. Clara Barton would do much to earn the title as president of the Red Cross, including organizing many relief groups to help wounded people. -
Assists Homeless
February 1888 Mount Vernon, Illinois, Tornado - Miss Barton and the American Red Cross assisted 3,000 homeless by providing food, shelter, and clothing. This operation shows that Miss Barton was not just aiming the Red Crosses services to wounded peopl. Clara extened the Red Cross service to anyone in need. -
Yellow Fever Epidemic
August 1888 Jacksonville, Florida, Yellow Fever Epidemic - Miss Barton visited affected areas and coordinated relief with the Howard Association. Red Cross nurses immune to the disease were provided by the New Orleans chapter. Clara made aure the Red Cross helped people all over and helped anyone that they could. -
Pennsylvania Flood
May 31, 1889 Johnstown, Pennsylvania Flood - Miss Barton arrived to direct relief operations after over 2,000 died and thousands more were left homeless. During four months of work, over $200,000 in supplies and $39,000 in cash were provided. This disaster relief program became the most celebrated effort in the early history of the American Red Cross. This shows how the Red Cross and Clara Barton would do anything to help people. -
Clara does her last relief effort
In the early 1900's there was a Hurricane and Tidal Wave in Galveston, Texas. Clara Barton lead, or directed, a relief group in mainly Galveston and houston. The Hurricane and Tidal Wave left about 6,000 dead. The relief operation distributed about $120,000 worth of money and supplies.
