Missouri Compromise
Made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. It made all states above the 36 Parallel free, and everything below allowed slavery. -
Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion
A rebellion that Nat Turner led with other slaves. It made slaves laws more strict. -
US war with Mexico
April 25, 1846-February 2, 1848. This was fought for the land of Texas and whether it would allow slavery or not. -
Wilmot Proviso
This tried to ban slavery in the new territory gained from Mexico. It was unsuccessful and people got mad. -
Compromise of 1850
It was a series of laws dealing with slavery and expansion of land. It made California a free state and left other states to decide for themselves (popular soveriegnty). This cause more tension to grow between the Free and Slave states. -
Fugitive Slave Act
This act was a part of the Compromise of 1850 and allowed slave owners to track down runaway slaves, and take them back. -
Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin
This was a book about a plantation. It explained the horrible things that happened to slaves and made people more aware. This cause the North and South to hate each other more. -
Bleeding Kansas
Started in 1854 and ended in 1861. These were basically a series fights in Kansas about whether slavery is good or bad. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This repealed the Missouri Compromise and let Kansas and Nebraska decide on things based on Popular Sovereignty. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a slave who was forced to move and sued for his freedom. He lost because slaves weren't technically citizens. -
John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry
He led an abolitionist raid on an arsenal in Slave States. It was called a dress rehearsal for the Civil War because it was practically a fight between the North and South. -
Abraham Lincoln is Elected
Lincoln is elected President. This makes the south very upset and causes states to secede leading to the Civil War. -
South Carolina Secedes
They secede from the Union soon after Lincoln's election because they do not like his views on slavery. -
Formation of the Confederate States of America
Southern states had seceded from the Union to preserve slavery which will eventually lead to the Civil War. -
Fort Sumter
It was the first battle of the Civil War. The union held the fort and the south attacked it. -
The Battle of Antietam
It was the bloodiest single day in all of US History. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
The turning point of the Civil War. It had the most casualties in the entire war. -
The Battle of Vicksburg
It was the last major battle in the Civil War. The Union had won. It ended on July 4, 1863 -
The Battle at Appomattox Court House
The very last battle of the war and Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy had surrendered.
